engine starting issues after rebuilt

Verify spark. Easiest way without shocking the crap out of yourself, is to hook up the timming light and crank for a second or two. If it flashes you have spark.

Okay you were right. I hooked the timing light on spark plug wire one, didn't flash. Tried on another spark plug, still nothing. Tried on my friend's truck, to see if the problem was not the timing light, it flashed, so I guess I do have a fire issue...

Ok, you need to check the power wire going to the distributor first. Use a test probe and make sure it's getting power with the key on. (Double check it is on the correct terminal, I realize you said you were sure once,but humor me).
 
I don't think i have a power wire going in the distributor. The coil is in the distributor. Here a pictures of it :

The green wire with the white stripe should be the tach wire. There should be a power wire that hooks up to the terminal next to it. Then a plug with two wires that goes into the terminals behind those.

Edit.... it probably fell behind the motor

the green wire is indeed the tach. The terminal next to it is the battery terminal. I don't remember having anything attached to it when i took it appart, but i'll look for it.
The plug with two wires, is that the one with the brown wires that go to the distributor body ?

Oh haha it's not fixed yet :smokin2: i'm still looking for that power wire...

Well that wire can't have gone far..... as soon as you plug it in it should fire.

If memory serves, I think it's light brown with a black plug on the end.

great news !!! it started !! but thing is, i had to stop after 5 minutes to stop for a leak, than i ran it again for 5 minutes, and had to stop it again because a power cable started to touch the header. would that screw up the break in process ? I actually stoped it again because the engine started to overheat... i don't have AC or an air blower in the car, but i have the command to put it to max, which I did... what would be the cause of overheating ? I mean, i've been reving it between 2000 and 3000 rpm for 10 minutes with the truck not moving so... is it normal ?
 
oh and i checked the thermostat before putting it back. It worked.

No need to go to 3000 rpm, stay above 2000.
You need 20 minutes for break in varying rpm to create different oil slash on the cam lobes in addition to rocker/lifter supply. Breakin should be ok but either way what's done is done.

Hope your using breakin lube or ZDDP additive.

in addition to the lube on lobes and lifters, i've put some break in oil "comp cam 1590"
and some break in oil additive: "comp cam 159" in the oil pan.

i'm sure i've put the stat correctly...

and it started really easily, first revolution

and i did vary the rpm between 2000 and 3000
 
Check your fan, original is a clutch fan. Try and spin it by hand, should only spin less than a turn or so. If it spins freely it's worn out. Double check your coolant level. Don't open the cap hot.
Your upper hose should get hard and hot when the thermostat opens, no pun intended.

Be careful around a running engine!
