Epic alaska road trip part 1

updates..in alberta

Hey guys sorry it has been a bit, 70jimmy thanks for the offer but I made

so far. People is the Midwest are some really friendly people I have noticed.

Well after that storm there have been no other incidents. Crossed the

border into canada, got molested by the border patrol. Well the u-haul did

at least. Sitting in the bay watching the custom dudes go through my

carefully packed stuff kinda irritated me. Felt like TSA search. They were

convinced I was bringing in guns. I told them that I spend all my money on

off-road parts. Hence the 40 inch boggers residing in "Mom's attic".

I stopped in a town called craven, the bartender/hotel manager found out I

had a dog. My dog is a people magnet, chick magnet also. Everyone

wanted to pet her and she got a 20 oz steak bone. She munched on that

while I had some bar food and a Guinness. 40 bucks for the night, score.

Drove through Saskatchewan and now I am close to the alberta/BC border.

Checked out a hotel in this town they wanted 150 a night, I walked out.

Went down the street to a motel, desk clerk likes dogs. Another free night

for the pooch and I paid less than half of what the expensive place was

charging. Toilet does not like to flush, fast internet, and plenty of parking.

Barricaded the door anyway, my dog is always vigilant at night so it's nice

that she pulled security for me.

I have the U-haul setup for sleeping in the back for the Alaska highway

where hotels are supposed to be stupid expensive. I also have 20 gallons of

gas in fuel containers and a full tank in the Subaru. I have been getting

fairly descent gps signal so far but I have a map for back up.

The terrain is starting to look more "alaska like" and less "dakota like".

Anyway Pics:

Flat farm land, Saskatchewan. Would be excellent to have cruise control, you hearing me U-haul!?!

Neat road trip(s).

Sucks that you "lost" the cat.

Updates

Well I drove, and drove and drove on the Alaska highway all the way to toad river. Then the weather started sucking so I stayed at a little hotel. Next day I drove 1100 miles, I just wanted it over. I spent about 6k on the trip including the u-haul rental. So I made it 4500 miles in 6 days. Pics soon.

Nice trip! The Alcan has been on my bucket list for a long time. I've been to the Fairbanks area several times, but seen never the 3500+ miles of roadway to get there...

Thanks for the pictures!

In 10 days I am flying down to the lower 48 for a wedding then load the K5

and the Corvette. I plan on actually taking it slower this time, to not only

save gas but to also have a better time. I am going to be using a better

camera, my smart phone was not the best for taking pictures. No pets this

time and no time crunch. Unless the pound finds the cat in Alabama...

whatever.

Due to stupid high gas prices on the Alaska highway I am planning on buying a

few more gas cans. I do not want to spend another 250 for 40 gallons. The

gas station in Whitehorse was charging 2.50 for a day old muffins, and

5 for an energy drink. Still have 200 CAD that I took out just in case I might

need it.

More planning for the second leg.

The K5 is finally getting tuned on Monday! I guess the guy was having

difficulty getting chips. My buddy is handling the details. I am hoping for at

least 12 mpg on the highway. I don't plan on driving nearly as quickly as last

time. I really wish gm had installed fuel drainage holes from the factory in their

vehicles. It would be nice to use gas stored in the car I am towing. I plan on

sleeping in the back of the k5 the majority of the trip to save on hotel rooms.

I left a few sleeping bags in the k5. A few propane tanks and a small cooler. I

also bought a spare battery for the truck just in case so i could jump start

the truck if need be. It just so happens that my c5 has an identical battery

as the truck so I actually have 2 spare batteries worse case scenario. I am

bringing a battery charger and a small air compressor, spare power steering

pump, a gallon of each type of spare fluid, a spare stub shaft, tow straps,

spare tbi parts and tools. Really the stuff I take wheeling.

Right now I have 10 gallons worth of gas cans, I think I might buy 2 more for

a total of 20 gallons of extra fuel. Overkill I know, but on the Alaska highway

they really gas gouged me last time. My spare tire on the K5 does not like to

hold air and needs the bead reset. So I plan on getting that done when I am

down there prior to leaving.

To prevent chips I plan on using the factory car cover then wrapping that in a

large tarp tightly. Also putting cardboard on the windshield as an added

precaution. There were a lot of cinders on the road on certain parts of the

Alaskan highway, and the k5 currently does not have mud flaps.

My speedometer is inaccurate due to the tire downsizing so I plan on putting

a "custom" paper one over the factory one with both MPH and KPH. No reason

to change it out since I plan on re-installing the Boggers when I get it back

up to Alaska anyway. I doubt I will speed but in some cities they have

strange speed limits.

I've got an older GPS you can have if you want it. Needs updating but does speed and all that just fine. Cost of shipping.

updates.

Well I made it back to AL. The guy who said he was going to tune my truck was a total flake, everytime I would try to get him to come by and tune it he would have some kind of excuse. This went on for about a month. I guess my money was not good enough for him. So I get a second opinion from TBIchips.com i.e. harris performance and he tells me in about 45 seconds that my 383 will never run right with the camshaft I currently have on my stroker. Good thing I never gave the joker the 280 to tune my truck I would never have gotten it right. I repeatedly emphasized that I needed that stuff done ASAP.

So as a temp fix and just to get me to Alaska I ordered a refurbished holley truck avenger on ebay. A used Weiland stealth intake manifold and a new HEI coil, cap and rotor. I would love to go with TPI or MFI but I need to get back to Alaska. Hopefully this works better than the crap eldebrock performer that I bought from auto zone last year.

I am staying at a buddies house for the moment. Got the intake manifold and the fuel pressure regulator installed just waiting on the rotor and the carb to show up now. Button it up, change a few fluids and reserve an "auto transport". I cannot wait to get out of this hot humidity.

If you need anything as you are passing through Alberta let me know! I am quite a few hours North of Highway 16, but I grew up in the Edmonton are and know a ton of people there. You drove right past my hometown of Ardrossan and within 2 minutes of my parent's place :)

I'm working nights for the next month or two but it would be no trouble to make sure you're taken care of. Even if you just need a pit stop for a shower, meal and a warm place to spend the night.
