exhaust manifold cracked

dude, theres a set in the for sale section now, dunno if it has air or not

and you can't just go to the hardware store and get a bolt that fits? Or weld over the hole? Something like that.
 
I did some internet searching. The key to the search was "smog pump delete". The plug is 7/8-18. Still some question as to if it is either an inverted flare thread or what. Someone said get a 7/8-18 spark plug thread tap and use an oil drain pan plug; NAPA part number BK 7041016, Oreilly part number 65231(called and store said unavailable). Suppose to be a stock oil pan drain plug for a 1965 Jeep Gladiator.

Or, back to the junkyard and grab the smog tube and get it welded over. Or get lucky and find a nonsmog manifold. If i would have done this sooner I would have just done shorty headers. Now I don't have time.

I'd just weld or braze up the original fittings after cutting the flute pipes off,or get some N.P.T pipe plugs ,I have used 1/4" NPT plugs on many GM manifolds and though they might not match the threads perfectly,I never had one loosen or come out on me either..seeing your thread is 7/8" you'll need a bigger plug than a 1/4",maybe a 1/2" NPT plug will work..

I have also seen mechanics tap the inner hole in the original fittings and screw bolts in them,or tap the inner hole in the flare seat where they screwed in and put bolts in there to plug the holes..
 
Thanks. I may be headed to the junkyard again. The manifold studs need replacing and the old ones are being stubborn. They are currently soaking in some break free type fluid. I could get lucky and find a non smog set. There are plenty of 88-95 trucks in the junkyard without smog tubes. But eyeballing the shape of the manifold I don't think they'll fit perfectly without exhaust modification.

I realize the simple solution is headers. But being my daily driver I'm trying the economical route. Now that's a contradiction. A 12 m.p.g. Suburban daily driver and economical does not fit.

The 7/8-18 plug from napa fits great. Now to get those studs out. Hopefully PB blaster does its thing.

Heat, heat, heat. That will help get the studs out. Heat up the manifold around the stud, not the stud itself. When it's good and hot spray some rust spray at the base of the stud, effectively cooling the stud faster than the manifold, shrinking it and sucking rust spray into the threads. Then remove the stud and repeat for the next 2 studs.

The truck with the cabover camper will come in handy though. An extra hunter this year would be crowded in my buddies camper, especially if our gear gets wet.
