Experimental part for CBBR (UPDATE) installed, with pics!

Couple shots of the 1st and 2nd version on my K5
I'm glad you posted pics of your rig! If we waited on cbbr, it would be another year. Heck it's been a year since the original thread was posted.

I like it!!!!

I'm confused though......is this CBBRs truck, or yours in the photos??? Who do I talk to for driving impressions???

I have held a long-standing belief that a front panhard bar setup would ELIMINATE death wobble. So I'm curious to know if this truck had death wobble issues, and now does not.

The design looks very thoughtful. The position follows the draglink perfectly (or at least VERY closely) so there should be minimal binding/bumpsteer issues. I've had this project on a very long "TO DO" list for my own truck, so I'm curious to hear a report from the road/offroad.

:usaflag:

One observation/comment. I've run a similar set up for a couple of years (I think?? bloody memory!) and whilst it really helps with on road handling (why I fitted it originally), when you get on the rough it really puts a lot of unnecessary stresses through your frame and axle. After all, a little bump steer etc off road is ok and the speeds are lower. I used quick release pins on mine, like ORD use on the shackle disco's and as soon as I get onto the dirt I pull the pins and stash the bar in the back. You can really feel the violence the rod takes if you leave it connected and start bouncing around on the rough.

Greg, the pics by Dcubb are Dave's K5, the ones that I posted are my Burb. He has driven on his setup for a while, mine is in progress.

Wow! That is some unreal fab skills on display right there, DCUBB.
That is easily one of the sexiest parts I've ever seen for a K5. Really dresses up the old school leaf spring suspension IMO. Maybe one day when I get some 37s and crossover and.........ah hell I just gotta get mine back on the road first.
The quick disco option makes good sense to me though. On road tightness with the ability to loosen it up a little when it gets rough. I like it!

I've never been of the mind set of "Oh well, it's a lifted truck and it's gonna drive like crap on the street so I'll just live it with because that's just the way it is". That said, I've been playing with different homebrew suspension and steering mods for a few years now. I wanted a vehicle that's very capable both on and off road.

With the stuff I've done so far to my k5 I'm very happy with it's performance
(especially on the street). The suspension flexes just as well as without a track bar and I notice absolutely no difference in ride in bouncy offroad situations, only much better steering feel (tighter, more responsive).

Mainly, I did a track bar because I hated the "rubbery delayed action" steering feel on the road after doing crossover.

And thanks for the compliments.

yeah best tech ive read in here in while! very nice ive been trying to run a track bar ever since i did cross over. damn i wish i didnt just buy ords cross member

Greg,

No, this truck never had d/w issues either before or after the trackbar. However the biggest tire I've had on it so far is 35".

As far as a track bar setup eliminating d/w, I don't know. I feel that it could help eliminate some for sure, but 100% again I don't know. I guess we'll just have to conduct some testing.:thumb:

Maybe if we're nice to Chad, he will be our guinea pig in this testing I mentioned in the previous post. I propose that he puts a gallon of water in each front tire and then do a flat out speed assault out on I-12 before and after installing the panhard rod.:haha::haha::haha:

Greg,

I am a firm believer that a front panhard would eliminate DW too. My experience was with a D60 front and stiff Rancho springs and 39.5" TSL's. No death wobble, and the truck actually handled pretty good. The springs were not only stiff, but pretty rigid laterally due to the pretty thick leafs.

I added a set of Alcans at all four corners, and had death wobble right away. I replaced the KP bushings and springs. Still death wobble, added 1/8" worth of washers under the caps and got rid of the DW but steering is spooky at best. The alcans are not rigid enough laterally to keep the diff centered under the truck...

I am going from stupid stiff springs to less stiff right now too. Now nearly as soft as alcans, but softer than the I-beams. Lots of things are changing all at once. Hopefully it all works as well in the world as on paper.
