family hauler burban

Haven't posted much on this in a while, just been driving it back and forth to work (alot). Yesterday it died going down the road, crank it over it sputters on the first crank, try it again and it sputters on the first crank. happen to have my fuel pressure tester with me, but cant find a damn test port lol, crawl under the burb and the previous owner had a fuel tank valve in there from when he had an auxiliary fuel tank, there's fuel leaking out of the valve. today i tried to reroute some hoses in the short time i had laying on the ice under the burb, still no go.

So i call a guy i work with who has been talking about selling his burb, i ended up buying it from him today, he is going to clean it out and drop it off tomorrow. 1997, suburban, 4x4, 1500, 350 engine, $1,000.

tomorrow ill haul the 91 to the shop at work and rip out the valve all together and trace the lines since there are 2 lines off the back of the throttle body and 3 lines down by the valve.

got it fixed, the previous owner had an auxilary tank under the burb, when he took the tank out he left the selector valve under there. something happened in the valve and shut the fuel off from the tank. switched a few hoses, installed a new WIX fuel filter and fired right up.

oh and here is my new burb

the 91 will be a backup vehicle for this winter, then in the summer i plan on making some changes.

I have dual tanks in my CC project but the switch is missing and obviously only 1 tank is in use. I'm concerned my previous owner might have done some hinky things with the fuel system too. I haven't been motivated to trace it out yet since it's working. Hopefully I won't get left on the side of the road like you did. :doah:

i have been neglecting the ol girl since i got the 97 and driving it, smoother ride and all that. i havnt even started it in a couple weeks, went out lastnight to do it and it cranked fast for a few cranks then slower slower slower click click click. guess the week or two of -20 degrees zapped the battery, ill jump it this weekend and see if its just needs charged or is dead.

put the new battery in yesterday and it fired right up after not running for over a month. ran it into town, shut it off went into the store came back out and it fired right up and ran for a couple seconds then just shut off like i turned the key off.

cranked on it and it spit and sputtered, got it to fire up and it ran while i was revving it up and then just shut off again and would not start.

of course i forgot my phone at home so i walked the 3 miles back home in 4" of snow and upper 20 degrees weather. got the wife and the 97 burb and went to go tow the 91 to the work shop so i can work on it later and it fired right up and drove to the shop.

I'll guess an ignition module, they often act like that when they die. I usually keep a few spares around because they are known to fail.

Ya at first I was thinking a fuel issue since it had a fuel issue a month ago. But then when it fired back up, I'm thinking ICM also. I even have a spare one left from my 88 K5

It has been a while since I posted in here.

Running issue is fixed, it was a cracked coil.

Blew the motor in the 97 and got rid of it.

Bought a 96 4runner and have been using it as a daily driver.

In the last 6 months I've put maybe 20 miles on the 91. Thought about selling it, now I'm thinking a body swap.

last week i was going to drive the suburban, started it, pulled it forward and it died and wouldnt re-start.

friday night i go out and it started so i backed it back into its spot so i could get the 4runner back in its spot, stomp on the throttle and it fluttered out again. i had a good idea it was a fuel issue so i went to town and bought a fuel pump.

saturday installed the fuel pump after cutting an access hole in the floor ( i wasnt pulling the tank ). change the fuel pump, starts right up, runs and dies again. turn the key on and go back to the access hole and cant hear the fuel pump. go back up and cycle the key a couple times and still cant hear the fuel pump, cranked the engine and it fired up. turned it off and tuirned the key back on and couldnt hear the fuel pump..... while i was standing there the pump kicks on.

sunday i went and picked up a fuel pump relay and installed it. standing outside the suburban, turned the key on and could hear the fuel pump louder than ever from outside the rig lol

ya now only if i had a couple hundred more bucks saved i would be picking up a dana 60

tinkered with odds and ends stuff on the burb over the last couple weeks.

when we recharged the A/C, we vac tested it and it said no leaks, we recharged it and with a month it was empty again, so i ripped the stock heater A/C unit out and put in my summit heater, i am going to turn the A/C compressor into an OBA setup.

which summit heater is this? do you have any more pics of your install? How do you like it?

so this is how my luck is lol

for the last year this thing has been acting up and i have gone through a ton of parts and testing trying to figure out the issue. it would randomly die, let it cool off and it would start back up. so i havnt really driven it in the last year.

the other day i found a wire to the temp sensor melted to the exhaust, moved the wire and i havnt had a single issue. all that for over a year and it was a single damn wire. burnout

thought i updated this, guess not.

so it wasnt the wire to the temp sensor, it acted up again. traced my grounds and found the one to the fuel pump the PO had cut and just twisted back together. fixed that and drove it back and forth to work for 3 weeks with no issues. then last friday i ripped the 4L80E/241 out and sold it on here to shane, saturday i picked up a manual bellhousing SM465/NP205 which i am converting to hydraulic to put in the burb.

ordered a CNC clutch pedal/master cylinder assembly, the 465 didnt come with a shifter so today i ordered an updated one piece shifter from Novak, and im waiting for money to shift around from paypal so i can order the new flywheel/clutch from rockauto. once i get it put in then i will figure out my mounting for the slave and bracket.

picked this up in the mail today

Curious to see how that works out for you. There is a part of me that says it's going to be a nightmare.

Novak makes a kit with the slave and mounting bracket for about $210 but really its just a simple bracket I can plasma out.
