That is awesome to have her interested....nothing like teaching a youngin' the shop stuff! Just keep her pulling the trigger on the welder, she'll get the hang of it, and there are some dam fine welders on this site...if you have any questions throw it out there.

Bought a new miller 211 last year preparing to play on the Jimmy and took some classes to refresh my memory and learn more about welding. Didn't learn all that much but got lots of handouts and material that I can reference. Excited to get started but waiting on my avalanche to get new top end, loss compression with only 91,000 wtf. So daily driving the Jimmy and 65 truck. I've been reading your build thred and lots of others, lots of good stuff. I'm sure I will have lots of questions and need help but this place seems full of everything I will tackle and then some. First time dealing with chat rooms and threads and all, didn't ever see myself participating but seems full of good people. Thanks in advance for the help I'll need it.

my son got into the welding/fabbing and loves it. he was out in the garage welding and gringing when I left for work today even he's practicing up so we can do the roll bar in his k5 this summer. If your daughter is even remotely interested in this stuff like she seems to be she'll grasp it and be a welding fool real soon my dad showed me when I was 15 and I've been in love with fabrication ever since.

Started looking into benders and doing research, it kind of sounds like most like the protools hd205 setup. Please chime in with thoughts and weather it's worth the money as it sounds like around a grand to get enuf stuff for a beginner to design a cage and bumpers in software and bending dies and bender.
I started out with the 105HD and a couple dies.... in my research, it was the one to go with... love mine.. good company too..
some guys in here have had decent luck with the cheaper vertical benders and DIY ones too..
Did you need software? Thinking of just trying with just 1.75 dies and the bender and give it a go, using the screw ups later for smaller bumper stuff and tire carrier, but pricing kits also. How often do you see these used?
I have a jd2 model 3 I think? The lesser expensive one.
3 things. Best thing to do is get some cheaper thin wall tube and bend, just mess around a bunch with it. Thinner wall is cheaper and bends just fine ( i think min wall thickeness is .065 for most 1.75 dies)
#2 there are plenty of cheap hydro conversions. or you can fab up one of your own. Not that is so much easier ( which it is) but it makes the bender moveable. A good thing when you are bending 7 bends in 3 different planes and using 18 ft of a 20 ft stick.
#3 Software isn't really needed I have used it before and will get it eventually but notching is more important and sometimes you have to deviate from what the software says just cause the truck isn't even. Sometimes even doesn't look right, even though it is, half an inch off looks right even though its not.
I hope to teach my little girl how to weld in the next couple years. Haven't found any decent gloves for a 6 yr old yet.

I just go oldschool oldschool... tape measure, angle finder, chop saw, carbide on a die grinder, tape measure, Ouija board, tape measure, etc.. tho I definitely wouldn't mind playing around with the software down the road...
I use it to build my stuff... it got heavy use for a couple yrs, now it's napping....
Finally got my avalanche back so today we got to start on the rear shackle flip. Got bumper off, dropped skid plate and tank. Torched off rivets (best part of day) got brackets bolted up. Need new lock nuts for the old hangers,couldn't find right ones locally, bummer will try other places tomorrow. Will post pics stay tuned.
