Feeler on selling the GRINCH UPDATE post #27

I think the biggest issue with selling a vehicle like that is not being able to get a loan. I'm sure there are plenty of us that would love to have it (I would) but I don't have $13k laying around, even if it is a deal.

it's really too bad. :(

You can, pretty easily in fact. BUT it is just a personal loan that you use to pay for the vehicle. The interest rate is a tad higher than a vehicle loan, but that's really the only way to get a loan on anything older than 10 years usually. Works even better if you could drop some cash and get a loan for the rest. If we weren't moving to Germany and I wasn't already sending one first gen back to Ohio I'd be considering it. I know how much $$$ it takes to get a truck (half) this nice:deal:

good point. technically I could buy it with a credit card, but the interest rate would suck.
hopefully someone steps up and grabs this deal... ideally someone in the community.

Do you think I would have a better chance selling it if I pull the motor and trans and ask way less? I could keep the motor and trans to entice me to do a new project.

if you have another motor and trans to put in it, I would say absolutely. even if it's a stock 350/465/205 combo or something. so long as it moves under it's own power and you can get the truck into a more affordable range I think that would help a lot.

Dennis,

I think this would be a good approach. It's not that people don't appreciate the "extra" value of the Caddy motor, etc.... Ultimately it just comes down to cost and people's ability to pay for it.

Remember this is going to be an "impulse purchase" for the buyer. This is not a practical daily-driver type thing....it's going to be someone's weekend toy and VERY few people are going to have > $10,000 sitting around for a purchase like this....and your buyer isn't likely to take out a loan for it. If he can scape together enough cash, he'll buy it outright.

I've said it before, and it's true for my own project: no matter what you've spent on the truck, they always seem to fetch between $6000 - $8000 on the open market....always. The 100% correct restorations will sell for more...but the "custom" ones always seem to hit a glass ceiling with regard to price. I think it's really just because the market for buyers gets SO small that it takes forever to find a buyer..... And that kind of enthusiast always feels that they can build the same thing cheaper (even though they probably can't).

It is more work to sell the truck and driveline separately but you are more likely to get closer to your asking price (total) by splitting things up. IMHO.

I'm glad I wasn't able to sell the Grinch. I would have felt bad and give them their money back. I had someone considering it and I took it out one last time. (I know dumb). I was only revving about 3500 RPM when I felt a really bad vibration and then no power and lots of smoke.

As of right now I am working with the machine shop to see how they are going to handle this. I bought all the parts from MTS (Awesome CAD dudes) and had the machine shop do all the work. 385 miles later this...

I feel I will have to put a new motor in to sell it and going with anything else besides another cad motor will be too much work and cost. I figure I will have to put another 4K into for the cad motor. Hopefully the machine shop will cover some or most of it. I plan on buying a long block from MTS.

I haven't pulled the heads yet to see if they are OK. I may have a bent valve or 2 since the cam also broke.

I say the rod bolt came loose and caused the chain of events.

This is terrible man! I can't believe you have to sell it AND now put more money into it for something like this. Pulling for the machine shop to cover it for you:waytogo:

Wow, that is some carnage. That sucks..

On the other hand, do ya think this is the 1st gen gods saying that you shouldn't sell it. :dunno:

 :D

If you need to build a new motor you could just sell it for your price minus the cost of the motor build and have no engine in it

Already tried that..
I was thinking the same thing, but trying to sell anything without a motor is tough. especially in the price range you are looking at.

sure hope the machine shop eats this one, really does sound like their fault.

anybody know what the final outcome on this was?

Still sitting motorless. Not looking good for the lawsuit either. I drug my feet to long and trying to get someone to write a statement is tough. They will talk about it all day long but when you ask them to put their name on paper or appear they get all C.S.
Bottom line there was 384 miles on it and there was a nut from the rod bolt in the pan. HMMM

I have been thinking on going with a MTS motor and putting it on ebay. But the motor will be at least 4K.
I have also toyed with the idea of parting it out. If I could get 8-9K back out of the rest of it I would be OK. I won't say how much of a loss that is but you all know!!!

It's a shame, but I have to be done off-roading for a while and just play a web wheeler for now! I still want to build a racer some day.

wow. so the engine shop isn't taking any responsibility at all? that's a tough pill to swallow.

sorry to hear you are still having so much trouble selling it. any bites even? or have you been holding off while deciding what to do about the motor?

I have not pushed selling it though. It has just been put on the back burner. I need to do something soon though.
