How is your M1009 set up (tires, gears, etc.)? The lack of a radio is a nice change sometimes. Mine seems like it gets close to 20 mpgs but it has small (or stock) tires on it. And yeah it is fun to drive. You can take the roof off and leave it off. After all there is no radio to worry about :D.
Mine is totally stock as far as axles and gearing goes 3.08 is stock I believe. It has a mismatched set of 31X10.5 r15 tires on it. What size gas tanks do the m1009s have? Seems like calculating mpg is gonna be a little off when you are shooting fuel into a big 3" hole and you are never quite putting the same amount in

look for M1009s at military auctions...i drove one in the operational field for years as well as M1008's and M998's all are diesle and can run off either diesel or Jet fuel. they are strong engines. well worth the find if you can get your hands on one.

BTW i HEART PBR :)

Everyone loves PBR, some just don't know it yet!

As for the M1009, the thing keeping me from getting one of those is the lack of cruise control. I drive about 400 miles a week to work and back, 99.5% of that being interstate. I've gotta have something with cruise control. I'm trying to replace my XJ as closely as possible (in a diesel K5 version). I've looked at a few and the prices seem good.

I don't mind the lack of a radio. I'll be putting in a CB and possibly a 2m HAM rig (if I ever get off my lazy butt and take the test) and I can always cut and stick one if I need to.

I believe you are correct about the PBR sir :D

As for cruise...i wonder if you can put an old school throttle lock on it. It's all manual. I'm sure if you search around the net someone has already done this. The HMMVs that i drove all had throttle locks. I had to do some work on a couple of them during after some of the convoys tho cause they would slowly slip. Not necessarily a big concern for someone that is driving on the pavement tho. I never had an issue with the lock slipping on paved surfaces...just on bumpy terrain!

Do the M1009's have a governor or do they have direct throttle control? I can see that working with a governor, but without it that wouldn't do much good here in the mountains. Might as well just pedal it.

i can't be for certain...i can ask my buddy in NorCal...he works on them and he can tell me right off!

Adding cruise control to a M1009 is possible. Post up in the wanted column for one. There must be a few parts rigs out there willing to donate to your cause :hack:.

A Silverado would make a better DD than a CUCV.

Martin

It depends on what you are looking for. I like manual windows and no frills. The CUCVs are also easier to find and more affordable. Touch up is easy too:draw:.

I'm not crazy about the power windows and a bunch of extras. Working A/C and cruise control are the only major aminities I'm looking for. Radio would be nice, but I can put one of those in.

I'm pretty glad I got my civy K5. I can always put manual windows in and I already gutted the moldy/stained interior. Cruise works and fixing the AC is just a matter of money and skill (neither of which I have at this moment).

Adding these things to a CUCV would have been a bigger job and they are pretty damn spartan from the start.

I guess you southern guys need your AC. I wish I had that issue.

One more thing about the M1009 though is that it already has a J-code intake which is nice.

This is true. My trucks are geared/tired equivalently and I do notice the extra 20 or so hp of Big Ugly vs The Blazer with a C-code engine and J-code intake.

It's not a huge difference but it is there.

I agree with the earlier post, get a Silverado model. Carpet, insulation, dome/courtesy lights, radio, AC, cloth seats, console and cruise are REALLY nice to have in a DD. Especially when that DD sees that many miles on the road every week. I'm willing to bet that the guys that DD their no option trucks, don't spend nearly as much time in them as you do.

This is kinda old, but I thought I'd just say that I've been unable to unload my XJ. After the accident this winter, I'll just be keeping it. I ordered some new rear springs and have the plan to put a little $$ into it this summer to get it up to par with where I think it should be.

Well, with tires ($620), Radiator/water pump/fan clutch/belt/hoses ($288), springs and such ($510), and I'm wanting to put another $700 in re-gearing and front suspension parts. That's ~$2200 worth of parts I'll have put on it this year. It's book value is only about $2500, so I can't afford to sell it. I'm gonna be the old guy driving the 40y/o Jeep everyday..... :waytogo:

You already have the 30ish year old K5...who cares?

Ahh well. You can still grow the mullet:saweet:.

I was just wanting something a little more robust for a DD. I like my Jeep alot, I was just ready for a change. Now I'm going to go ahead and spend that money making the Jeep what I want it to be in the end.

Oh, I still got the 84 K5 and Mullet Camaros.... But the mullet got over-ruled.... :doah:
