Umm why not? If there is no front driveshaft why would it matter if the hubs are in or not? I used to drive with the hubs locked in all the time in the winter.

Avery I am not sure what the concern is with the front driveshaft, but yeah just unlock the hubs spin the yoke, and you should be able to see the axle joints at the steering knuckles spin. Lock the hubs in and try it again you shouldn't see the joints spin. If all that happens then the front end is fine. I imagine the front shaft is removed to due length or angle issues with 9" of lift.

You don't need a gasket for the diffs if you change the fluid. I would bet 90% of the members here use RTV. Actually there was a poll on it within the last 6 months. Clean up both surfaces and RTV it up. Never used a gasket on the diffs before, but just my opinion:wink1:

As for the oil dipstick. As mentioned some of them pull out easily. I believe there should be an O-ring where it goes into the pan. Check that for leaks.

Get the TV cable adjusted ASAP. That will kill a 700R4 fast if adjusted incorrectly.
Lets see if the yoke turns.

Ok

Are you concerned the front axle may be AFU internally?

With 38's I would think the U-joints would let go before the R&P.

Not to worry, I not flamin anyone, just hopin they haven't sold you a surprise. We are here to help.:D

No problem dude that's why I'm on here.
I know exactly what you want me to do now, I'll do it tonight w/ my 1000w flood lights (any excuse to light up the neighborhood) ;)

Yeah the reason that the front shaft isn't in is because of the lift, the kit came w/ a spacer but we didn't trust it and I knew that I had some leaks to fix and some adjusting to do before I took it off road so why risk breaking stuff by putting in the spacer. ;)

Ok so for a recap of things for me to do soon....

Inflate tires back to 30psi as sidewall reccomended (currently all @ 21.5 to 22psi)

Check front axle by unlocking hubs spinning yoke then repeat after locking hubs into place

Find why I'm pukeing oil everywhere (I think its that dip stick tube still)

Adjust the TV cable asap!

Check all fluids (ATF, oil, and diffs)

sound about right? I just want to get it going again where I won't hurt anything. Then I can concentrate on some other not so crucial issues.

Don't need to guess when its a simple test. You and I would turn it before taking delivery, Noob wouldn't know. Becuase of the experience "we" have, if I was buying a "previously owned" like this, I would offer a free diff oil change, both of them, before buying. Shoot for that matter, do the engine and trans as well.:D

I'll tell you one thing though, whether or not my front axle is messed up internally (which I doubt because it never has had the front shaft on since he lifted it and swapped from stock shoes to the 38.5 mickey's on there now) I'll know in the future.
One less newb thing that I'd do in the future. ;)

I had to rebuild my rear axle because I was NOOB two years ago. I also had a 700R4. Also put in a new motor. T-case works:haha: but I can tell its been opened and probably doesn't stilll have the orig. chain.
Signing-off now.

Thanks soooo much guys for the help. I'll be back with an update but for now some tv is calling my name before I head off to bed.
I'll keep you all posted on how I do checking things off my list.

Better look into Mud flaps ASAP if your driving around CA. That is a fast ticket there....

I just figured Out what the deal is with your chocks i got 20 bucks on it. I bet that the truck was originaly a quad shock set up(Two shocks per side up front) And when they did the lift they used only the one shock and mounted it to where the second(non normal) shock would go. I am sooo Smart! and yea that dash....woah. need to get a seat cover too.

Great detective work, it's not a problem then is it? Just not ordinary.

I know I know....the dash, the seat, the bed, the chrome around the fenders, the axles, I know that theres stuff to be done. Now that I have a list of what mechanically needs to be done/checked I'll take care of that first. Afterwards I'll worry about the cosmetic stuff.

so did you adjust the tv....i need to adjust mine because i put in a TB spacer and i dont know how:eek1:

Just use the link that I posted, I'm at school right now so to answer your question no I haven't. I'm planning on doing it Friday after school when I can get my dad to give me a hand.

Good job Avery. Pickups rule. (Sorry blazer guys :D ) You're a smart kid, and not too proud to ask questions. You'll make a heck of a builder/wheeler. Pismo is great I miss it a lot. Used to pull stuck motor homes, etc every weekend with my old Dodge. I'll holler at you when I come up to visit - wanna bring my wife up there.

As far as the truck....shift kits just break stuff, but you heard that already. Pickups have an advantage in that they flex in the middle, unlike a Blazer, Jeep or other SUV where the frame and body fight each other and break. I don't have a wheeler right now (married, kid:D ) but I'll be building one b4 long. Meantime check out my yahoo album and the SoCal thread for pix of my brother's K10 for some pickup building ideas. Some gnarly frame flex in there. His truck is one of the most effective 4x4s I've ever seen. He showed up pro rock crawlers (they were at a little disadvantage in the dirt) at TDS last weekend.

You're gonna wanna brace the steering box. Got Xover? One ton axles are nice. Minimum lift with soft springs and a nice fender trim is my preference. F*RD fronts are nice cuz of the hi-pinion - saves driveshafts from rocks and relieves driveshaft angles. The diff is on the "wrong" side tho, but that can be fixed with a different tcase. My bro has a stock 305 that works well, enough power, but doesn't break parts too often. Keep building, holler when ya need help. -David

You can never be to proud to ask questions. Thats how you learn K10A'sBROinSLO. For sure give me a hollar' when you head up next, for that matter anybody who heads through fresno if you want to see her in person.

BIGBLAZE433 as I said before I'll be working on adjusting the TV cable tomorrow night, I don't know much that I will be able to tell you after doing it because of how detailed the info. on numerous sites are but I'll give it a shot if I am successful....I take that back when I'm successful (positive thinking!) ;)

Ok guys just thought that I should update you all on the status of things....I took some hi-res photos this afternoon after a good wash so you can see some detail.
I did some pretty serious de-greasing and overall cleaning of the under belly of the truck to allow me to spot the source of any leaks, before I could tell that I had a substantial leak but it was so mucky underneath that it was close to impossible to see the source. Anyways to speed up this post I checked the dip stick tube (engine oil) because I had asked if it was supposed to move, you were all right, I just pulled it out, wiped it off and pushed it back down in....it kind of popped in place and no it has a nice snug fit. The oil level is now readable from the stick. So that problem is taken care of.
I did find the source of my leak though....it was on the transfer case and right next to it just drip by drip losing fluids, it's red and after I traced it to the source I found that it's tranny fluid, I think that I'll just be able to buy a new gasket for it and re-seal it followed by some fresh fluids. At first I thought that it might be causing some of my shifting problems but then I thought about it more and realized that on the 700r4 unlike say a th350 it uses that TV cable for it's only life line so other than causing possible internal damage by not having enough lubrication I don't think that the leak could cause shift problems....am I right?

Ok have fun looking at the pictures.....

i dont believe the leak should have anything to do with it..the tv cable is most likely your problem...i brought mine down to the tranny shop and they couldnt adjust it because it was seized...they couldnt and i couldnt get it to dissengage so i have to wait till monday to get it put in:( :( ....3 more days without my truck:mad:

What's wrong with a Superlift driveshaft spacer?

Superliftspacer.jpg

Had mine for 4 years....never broken a thing...

A leak won't cause shifting problems....unless it is so bad it makes your fluid level low. If the level is low, the trans will shift differently...you will feel it. TV cable will change all shift points since it tells the trans how and when to shift based on throttle. For example, if you have your foot all the way down, you want the trans to wait to shift at higher RPM, and that's how the trans sees it with the cable.
