ford shock towers

Yeah, I wanted easy and fast too. In the end I wasted days trying to come up with easy and fast unsuccessfully. Honestly, the ford towers are OK, I just don't like the leverage they can put on our floppy frames.

Now I gotta come up with something better for the rear shocks. I'm certain that won't be fast or easy either... :D

Rene, are those 14" 5150's? your on top of the axle right?

Got them. They are heavy, thick and burly, and $9.00 for the pair at the junk yard.

nice munepit
I was going to say, bring a large breaker bar with you. I had my lazy friend hold the outside and I climbed under with a 2' bar to break them loose. Then switched to a ratcheting one and finished it off. I got lucky to fine mine, almost walked past the only ones in the lot.

PS, those suckers are ugly :) Ugly like a 9 dollar bill! OOO

I'm starting to get confused. I cut off 6.5" off the mount. Now its about 9". It was getting in thee way of the steering shaft. I have bee measuring many many times to find the right place for it to go. I can now mount it 7" higher than stock, but I have 12" travel shocks. I will get new shocks. I am going to mount it as high as the mount will let me, bolt and weld. Get new shocks and build bumpstops. Here is the mount cut down.

Yup, 14.5" travel 5150's. i'm showing about 6" of chrome with em mounted on top of the axle. I haven't got it all twisted up yet, but normal driving it appears that ~3" of the chrome shaft is cleaner than the rest. I really need some softer springs up front...

My lower mounts are on the fugly but functional side. I really didn't put any time into them as they'll need to get redone when the 60 goes in. Basically I shaped two pieces of 1/4" flat stock and welded them to the "C" on either side of the castle nut.

What I have always done is put a zip tie real tight on the bottom of the chrome. After driving a bit, you can tell how much uptravel your using.

Here is a pic of it close to where I'm going to mount it, I think. There is about 4.5" on the frame to bolt and weld on, and the same abover the frame.

quick slightly on topic question

when welding on the frame, what do you do before welding? Like battery cables etc.
Me = clueless

Don't know what the big deal is, I've been running Ford shock towers for years and years...........:waytogo:

Seriously though, you would think I would know, but that is not a part I have paid all that much attention to over the years.

However, the two bolt ones with the single hole on top, the one where the stud of the shock goes up through, was used on the '79 F150 4WD, and probably before that.
F150s went through a major wimpifcation between 79 and 80. So there is no telling what the tower looked like after 80.

For instance, they went from cast iron radius arms to stamped sheet metal, NP205 to a BW14something aluminum case transfer case, and a Ford 9inch rear end to an 8.8.

So, when I went with a new truck in 89, I went from a 150 to a 250 and shortened it to SWB specs.

If you want one of the heavy duty ones, look for round headlights, or square headlights with the sides of the front grill rounded out to the sides with no blue oval in the center.
The square headlights mostly hit in the 78 to 79 range, but none of them had an emblem in the middle of the grill.
And all were solid front axle.

There is an 89 150 model outside, I will look at the shock towers tomorrow and let you know what it has.

I didn't weld my ford shock towers on at all. Just 3 grade 8 bolts through the tower and the frame and called it a day.

Stamped shock towers $11.44 each X 2 + $9.50 shipping =$32.38
& I didn't have drive to the salvage yard & lay under a FURD

Stamped part # ESTZ18183A $11.44 ea

Cast part # F81Z-18183-AA $22.31 ea

But this way, I got out of the house and got away of the 4 month old crying baby and wife!
For $9.00 it was worth it. And I cut them in half. Trust me, I thought about it for awhile before calling the dealership. And they were closed.

The ones I pulled were reinforsed on the bottom half? Is that standard?

I might go pick up two cast mounts for ****s and giggles and see if they work/ fit better for me.

Thanks!

honestly, I thought ur mounts looked a little different than mine. Wasn't sure enough to say anything though. The line they have at the bend, I don't remember having that....

Are you talking about the mounts I pulled from the junk yard? If so, I have never seen these mounts before(Ford), but there is 2 pieces on the bottom of the mount. I don't know if they came from the factory like thid or not, but there is 2 pices of channel welded together. It doesn't go all the way up, but I think its for the mounting bolts. Its thick. I cut that off though.

My brackets didn't look like that. Mine didn't taper toward the bottom like yours and didn't have the reinforcement welded in. My setup isn't as sexy as Rene's but here is how I did it:
