Frame Paint

I'm glad you really did chime in in this thread. I want to do this **** right and even though don't plan on keeping the truck forever don't want some idiot saying, "Yeah this gomer didn't even do this or this right"

As for the Fram filters...I'll never run one again. I've never held such ****ty oil pressure in anything i've ever owned. I'll take a napa gold filter before that anyday
 
Does the zinc need to be top coated? Boat supply places are plentiful around here (Maine coast). So like a bottom paint would be good??

hi all . kimball mid west sell a real good zinc primer i have used alot love it . they sell to any one . they have it in gal or in rattle can .goolge them find web page call order.

the zinc chromate is just a self-etching primer..... you CAN just topcoat that, but I'd only recommend that on parts and such, if ya didn't want the hassle of doing both primers... it wont be as bulletproof...

and I'd only put bottom paint on a vehicle if your worried about getting barnacles on it! :wink1:
 
Rykon, thanks for the good information. When speaking of bottom paint, what do you recommend for the underside of the floor pans? Do you recommend media blasting and then the same process you explained in the earlier post.

yup, cleaner the metal the better.... tho always not "doable" or within a budget, blasted, raw steel is always your best starting point...

for undercarriage stuff I usually like to go with a few more mils of paint for durabilty, as opposed to what you might put on a hood/sheetmetal...

most people prefer a satin look to the frame/undercarriage... rattlecans work, thats where having a quality, well prepped primer underneath is critical.. but a "pro" job will have a catalyzed satin topcoat..... lot's of 2-part satin topcoats available from the paint manufacturers... personally, I just run flattening agent in my Imron...
 
I'm kinda on a budget but ryokens gonna make me go broke :haha:

I wanna do this right so moneys not an option. It just may take longer to get this thing back together. Either way it's been awhile since i've did any of this kind of work. I sprayed trucks and **** in school but that was almost over 8 yrs ago.

I've rattlecanned everything lately :doah:

Yeah but i have a mind of a 60 yr old. Trust me. Hell just yesterday i was thinking of something i needed from the parts store and got distracted then about 5 minutes later i was thinking, "wth was i just needing??"

I thought for 20 minutes before i realized what it was and the parts stores were closed :crazy:

That happens atleast 3-4 times a day

BUT i can sing "Ice ice baby" word for word :rolleyes:
 
Ryoken. Do you think i could use this in place of the Dupont urethane primer?? I don't like cheaping out but it seems like decent stuff :dunno: and i'll save a few bucks

Just asking your opinion

i haven't squirted it, but I've seen it around for awhile now.. similar to Nason's 2K in appearance... solid numbers are decent...

probably pretty good, but until you squirt it and see it cover, fill and sand, you wont know..

did i miss a price? The Nason is pretty damn cheap at $90 to 100 a gallon for a quality primer...

just a highend info blurb...... Glasurit is THE best paint system I've ever seen... sh*t rocks...

oh, and I'm buzzed, but not THAT buzzed!!! :wink1::haha:
 
Price for the Maxx fill is $69/gal. That'd be $20-30 i could put towards the Imron or the Al's Liner that's going on last.

Just thought i'd save a few bucks and still get a quality product.

Just an idea really. I figure i'll have about $600 in just the product i'm using on the frame. Maybe more
 
Not to hijack or anything but if certain poeple get pissed when you answer questions Paul then they need to shut their mouths. I have a new project that I want to be super nice and now I completely changed my route with the frame. Probably gonna get some cheapy rattle can for now and I will start buying stuff and do it right once and for all.

go for it, let us know how it squirts..

also, just kinda "reading into" your post a bit.... one thing I would tell you guys is that, as far as a topcoat goes, Imron is usually not the best choice for most these days.. I still get a decent deal on it, but the price has gotten ridiculous on Imron... plenty of other single stage's out there from manufacturers that are pretty comparable, at 1/2 the cost of Imron..

thanks Eric..... :D it's not like some are getting all butt-hurt about it and reply.... more me feeling guilty about making someone feel bad about their work... :o

lots of options and avenues on products, systems, etc... sometimes a project warrants rattlecans, sometimes you want the very best, but most often it's some happy medium between the 2....

Meh, I am a big fan of the rattle cans, but I like to read your posts. Your way is definitely the right way, and educational for those that want to do it the right way.

I'll keep shaking my rattle cans though.
