from Diesel to Ls swap on my M1008

You are the third person to tell me that, I think ill hold on to it lol. is this motor kinda the pinnacle of the 6.5? It does have a cooling set up for the electronic 6.5 thats after market i dont need.

Does that mean this is a mechanical-IP engine? If not, PMD cooling is a big issue in stock form.

Either way, it's not about being the pinnacle, it's just that the serpentine setup is a nice upgrade for all the 6.2 owners out there. V-belts just aren't that awesome.

gotta think like the SEALs...the only easy day was yesterday.

I am swapping in a mechanical ip on my 6.2 no electric ips for me.

That's what I think about when I hear about GMs electric IP

I don't understand why they bothered with changing it. When properly working, the electronic 6.5 engines aren't remarkably better than the mechanical ones. When not working they have grumpy customers. Hindsight calls that upgrade an all-around failure.

I got the motor back to my house, pulled the turbo off and took off the passenger side exhaust manifold, Im paranoid something will happen to the turbo and the manifold, I know nothing will just its my precious lol. I have to pull the harness and then in take and other parts, but I also have to do the freeze plugs and IP and re-gasket the 6.2 before I can start the reassembly.

Look online for instructions to do a homemade boost master. Ditch the vacuum operated wastegate. I bought the one from Heath as its only $100 but you don't necessarily have to if you don't want to spend the money.

Adjustable boost with the turn of a wrench.

2 things.

First, these are fairly common parts. It is not nearly rare enough to qualify as your "precious." :deal: :doah:

Second, is that boost controller set at a given value? On mine the rod threads in and out to adjust the wastegate setting. But I don't see such an option here. :dunno:

Well when you are on a limited budget its precious to me. I appreciate your input but i dont like the way you are talking down to me.

Will do. I thought i had seen people do this on other sites. Ty!

Quite sorry about that, I was not meaning to talk down to ya. Not in that post, nor any of the others. I found the Gollum reference kinda funny, and I tried to roll with it. It clearly didn't work, so I'll apologize.

I understand limited budgets and the joy that comes with finding the right part cheaply. All of my vehicles have been low-budget rigs (DDs & projects both).

For the record, I really like what you're doing and think you'll enjoy the turbine a bunch. I don't know how much you have driven 6.5TD engines, but IME the extra oomph is a nice feature (in addition to the other upgrades like the serpentine setup & the MT-28 starter). Someday, when budget & time allow, I hope to also add such features to my rig (already have the starter upgrade). So I'm paying attention to see how this all turns out.

Cheers! :)

They are controlled by the computer which controls the vacuum pump. Which when it fails will leave you with no boost, hence the mechanical swap. Essentially just a rod with a spring.

Gotcha. I have worked with a mechanically-controlled vacuum wastegate system and a couple of spring-based systems. But so far I have managed to avoid personally touching the computerized 6.5 engines (aside from poking around under friends' hoods). So I have much to learn.

Any idea why the computer controls it? Is there some advantage that mechanical controls don't offer?

Campfire,

Thank you. Sorry for my harshness :) i have never driven a turbo 6.5 befor so I am in for a surpise. I appreciate all the input you have given me so far. Im excited to see how this goes.
