Fullsize Pre-runner Thread!

2wd fords had TIB AKA twin I beam front axles. 4X4's had TTB AKA twin traction beam front axles.

The reason they are claimed to be "better" for long travel is they pivot on the opposite side of the frame from each tire. Therefor they have a longer arm.

Now, I realy doubt they are better in stock form as the oilfield has prooved they dont hold up well to washboard roads with various bumps dips and craters. But thats in stock form...add better quality parts to them and Im sure they hold up a lot better. but the main reason they are prefered is the long arm designe that provides longer travel. Same way as jeep long arm suspention and long a-arms on rails provide more travel.

Some of the things I know are prone to failure on TTB fords are ball joints, C-bushings, trailing arm bushings(the bushings are not there on 3/4t trucks as they use leafs instead of coils), the inner alxe joints, and the stock steering is kinda crappy. Like I said replace them with high quality parts and add subtle suspention and they should work fine.

Yep, you can't make a hard core 4x4 front suspension like TTB without spending booku bucks for the uber expensive A-arms and CV-joints that most of the later trucks need.

The Geometry takes a while to get used to but it works well. My Ranger had so much down travel for a stock truck with simple 2" longer springs that I had to make 10-12" tall platforms for my jack and jackstands to sit on top of so I could get the wheels off of the ground.

Half the problem was Ford using poor quality coil springs and having the outer wheel bearing nuts torqued to 150ft/lbs instead of 225ft/lbs.

The wheel bearing nuts loosen up and then that starts to rattle everything there loose and then along the way that kills the ball joints and meanwhile the coil springs are sagging and the tires are sitting like this: / \.

YUP, been there done that.

the wheels on all ford truck 2 or 4 wheel drive, piviot weird when turning IME, like the van i have been driving for about that past 2 months, the tires really "lean" when turning compared to most other trucks. AHH good old ford:doah:

Ya now its off topic

Amazing how when you actually maintain TIB or TTB the tires sit perfectly up and down like they should. Neglect the maintenance and they get out of whack really quickly.

Wait a minute, they sit stright? I thought the came from the factory tilted. :haha::doah:

Just like how fords came from the factory with power steering leaks (so my friend says)
