Gas cans

The best fuel cans out there:
Current-issue NATO can
It's a bit pricey, but it won't leak. We used the water versions of these cans on our aircraft for our just-in-case water supply (on top of what we carried ourselves).

I got mine a bit cheaper... :wink1: :wink1:

Whatever you do don't buy the ones that you have to push the nozzle in or up against something to make it pour  Those are the biggest piece of junk gas cans ever made IMO..

A buddy of mine bought one last year when he couldn't find the regular kind and I tried to use it a few times and after that I told him to throw it away and I would buy him a good one just so I didn'y have to use it ever again :haha:

The steel NATO style (wedco) are the best ones. I have a 2.5gal one in the bed box of my s10...FULL. It vents no fumes and even confined into that little space you can't even smell that there is gas in there. I use 2 of the 5gal ones in my K5.

I mail ordered a few of the wedco brand ones from www.partsamerica.com and they even shipped them to me here in the PRK (peoples republic of kalifornia)...but that was a few years ago now. The 2.5gal one I got from MAD4x4 about last year.

If I put in my zip code it won't come up...but if I put in another zipcode (outside of Kalifornia) it will come up. I wonder if they would still ship it to me if I put in the wrong zip to start with and changed it while checking out?

It sucks that you have to do underhanded things here just to buy a gas can

Oh...to correct my previous post it was www.mad4wd.com that I got the 2.5gal version from.

That doesn't sound like the NATO ones I have. Is it the newer plastic one or the old Blitz style?

The plastic ones leak out fumes out THROUGH THE PLASTIC. Make sure they are stored outside your truck.

The Blitz ones just leak. Keep them outside your truck too.

The only ones that I would trust in a confined space are the NATO/Wedco steel ones.

I like the old style where you operate the vent yourself.

It's because of retards from Florida that they can't sell them anymore. Some douchebag extraordinaire in Florida came up with the idea of putting water heaters in garages. :screwy:

I have a few of the old Blitz Jerry cans. The problem is that it's damn near impossible to find good rubber seals for them.

There is a water heater in the garage I stay at. I put the gas cans on the other side of the 2 car garage away from the pilot light. I have 15 gals of fuel in the really cheap wallmart blitz cans

Putting the cans on the other side of the garage IS NOT A SOLUTION. If you store gasoline inside with ANY gas can you are taking a chance. Do yourself, your family, neighbours, and friendly firefighters a favour and take them outside.

On the 120* day in Twentynine Palms when I schlepped 30 of them around, filled with JP-5, I never once smelled fuel fumes. Nor did I ever smell gasoline fumes all through this summer from the can in my shed for the mower. The cheeseball plastic cans definitely reek, but not the real Mil-spec NATO cans. They're literally like 1/4" thick.

Well it is good to know that there is another (non-CA legal) option out there. I read the reports on how many TONS per day leak out through the normal HDPE gas cans. The law made you use the stupid new auto-crap spouts (that don't work for crap if there isn't the non-lead restricter at the fuel filler) but you could still use the thin HDPE  In fact for a while there were no metal cans sold (legally) in CA because they hadn't invented a crap-spout for them yet.

The metal NATO cans are great. I've used them a few times.

I have the old "jerry can" style. If you have a good seal on them they are good, but not like the NATO ones. I would bet a lot of the people who complain about the old ones don't even use a gasket. The reason I still love my old ones is the spout I use. http://www.extremeoutback.com/index.cgi?cart_id=6416625.3552&pid=67 After Katrina, when everyone was freaking out at the height of the price gouging I grabbed two cans from the shed and filled my wife's Jeep (our primary commuter vehicle) just like i was at the gas station.

opfor2, or anyone else, how do you find out how much shipping will be at "CheeperThan Dirt"?

One more thing, Northern has the 5 gal, metal, Blitz cans for $32 on sale right now.

FWIW, I remember hearing the red metal Blitz cans were junk. If theyre any comparison to thier red plastic cans, im inclined to agree. Im gonna get the GI style jerry cans, either traditional or new NATO style, just havent gotten around to it yet.

EDIT: Do the new NATO cans have the lip on the bottom of them so they fit in the older jerry can holders?

The metal NATO style cans won't fit in the same bracket as the old Blitz cans (which suck). I wouldn't pay $32 for a blitz when you can get a brand new NATO one for $30 with a spout.

1) I don't know what to say about being "junk". That's kind of vague. They need a good O-ring on the spout to pour properly, and a good gasket to cover the vent hole when being stored. The 5 PSI pop-off opens before anything else when I pressurize mine. ????

2) No, they are made w/ a seam down the center, no reason for a lip.
