Gear Set-up Question

the problem with 3.73s is the 241 transfer case does not have a low enough ratio in low range for the tougher trails. i have 3.73 gears in it right now (10 bolt/14 bolt semi floater) and wanted a little lower gears. i am willing to keep it 70 or less if i have to. the 4L80E overdrive makes 75mph comfortably with 3.73s

Yeah I see what you mean. Having lower t case gears makes a world of difference. I do mostly rock crawling and I rarely use my clutch because of that. Well I bet you're ready for that Detroit to show up do you can get it in.

the D60 locker will be here tomorrow. i 'think' i have everything to finish this project, even the 1-5/16" one ton master cylinder and brake line adaptors (the fittings are different). of course there will be something i forgot or stuff in the front diff i gotta replace (seals or the like), but i'm somewhat prepared.

the D60 was supposedly rebuilt and stored. not installed since the rebuild, but we'll see. when i dig into it, i'll see what the bearings and stuff are like to see what kind of install kit i'm gonna need.

I still run a pattern on the gears after I install a full carrier replacement locker such as a detroit. But I also run one before to verify that they are the same.

Remember since a low pinion front is actually driving on the coast side. Run your pattern on the drive side. Used gears you usually run the pattern on the coast side to get a more accurate pattern. But you have been driving on the coast.

That being said I have never had to change the pinion. Just always wanted to make sure.

On my own personal vehicle that would be several years of hard off roading on the front axle with my detroit, it came out dead the same as the open carrier

What do you mean you've never had to change a pinion?

guessing he means he hasn't had to change pinion depth when replacing carriers??

i'll have to check mine of course, because i do not know that it is set up correctly now. i may check it before i pull the carrier too. it feels like there is not enough pinion pre-load so i'll have to check that also.

Yah I have never changed my pinion depth. :D:D:D

I have redone the preload on a couple. But thats no biggie really.

Even when installing gears I've never changed pinion depth.... Reuse the shim that was on it bc its housing specific. Not the proper practice but has worked for me on a number of rear ends.

That can happen but I have seen gears ruined because they just reused the stock shim pack. Seen em be very very loud too.

Certain axles seem to do this more often than others. JK 44s I think I have only changed the shim pack twice. Had a couple 60s where it all setup lovely too.

And a couple Dana 50s

Plus I always check the patterns to make sure its good so if I need to change it out not a big deal. Most the rears I've done were ford 8.8s which are easy as hell to build.
