I still run a pattern on the gears after I install a full carrier replacement locker such as a detroit. But I also run one before to verify that they are the same.
Remember since a low pinion front is actually driving on the coast side. Run your pattern on the drive side. Used gears you usually run the pattern on the coast side to get a more accurate pattern. But you have been driving on the coast.
That being said I have never had to change the pinion. Just always wanted to make sure.
On my own personal vehicle that would be several years of hard off roading on the front axle with my detroit, it came out dead the same as the open carrier
