well i was out wheelin a few nights ago when i blew my ring and pinion apart on my chevys 60... they are genuine gears... now i need a new set and want to switch to something thats stronger... i have a 500+hp 496 on 42" tsls... i was in a mud hole and it was fine. i got stuck no problems... got towed out in reverse and at about 2000rpm there was a huge bang... got home and tore it apart to find it was the ring gear... its not like i was at 5 grand i was at 2 and i am a little angry that the gears let go and not a ujoint or even a hub or something... what gears would beable to withstand what i got?

thanks a ton.

heres some carnage pics

ohh and the brown is just flash rust from welding it and letting it sit overnight to cool.. NO THE WELDS DID NOT BREAK OR CRACK OR ANYTHING OF SUCH NATURE

Maybe the gears weren't set up right

Gears aren't as strong in reverse. That's likely part of the problem. I bet it sounded cool when iot happened, though.:doah:

That's actually not true in this case because its a low pinion axle in the front. Its being driven on the coast (weaker) side when going forward and the drive side (stronger) in reverse.

Yukons are suppose to be strong, but they are a little noisy for street use.

Yukon gears are not inherently noisy, where did you hear that?

I've used Yukon gears many, many times with success. IMO, your problem is either gear setup or the really crappy genuine gears. Try any other brand of gear and set them up correctly and you'll have better luck.

Of course, there is a point when the ring and pinion is a weak point.

Good call. I didn't notice that at first glance. Maybe you're right about this just becoming the weak link, but he didn't even have the RPM up. Maybe it just got more traction running backward than he usually had forward and BANG.:dunno: Seems kinda odd, especially in a mudhole. Oh well, time for Rockwells and all the good stuff for them, just to be sure.:D

the gears were set up correctly. i saw the contact pattern and felt the backlash... it was done right... just wondering if it was the genuines. i deff want to swithc but idk to what. i have richmonds in the rear but they are very expensive... yukons were my next choice

what ratio ?

the deeper you go the smaller the pinion count and the faster you can rip the teeth off the gears.

lots of guys over the years never blew up 3.08-3.73 range. but deeper like 4.10 -4.56 and more thay were tearing up gears all the time.

heck i had 2 sets of 4.10 in dana 44 front . get few month then bam ring gear teeth gone. went to a dana 60 and no problems. other friend had dana 60 and 5.13 with tsl front and boggers rear. if he didnt watch it with his 358 dirt mod motor still running cam 2 he would eat front gears.

so its all in the setup quality and ratio that make the life span teter totor work in your favor or the parts stores favor.

With that much power, you might consider going with whichever manufacturer offers the best warranty.:D

What was the pinion bearing preload? Carrier bearing preload? If either of those are wrong it can allow the gears to walk around.

Not saying it was either but alot of folks just set the pinion pretty tight and do not check carrier bearing preload at all.

Honostly I think your problem is the fact they were Genuine gears, get some Yukons and as far as noise goes, um a strong big block and 42s.......noise isn't really a concern here

well i just looked up the # i found on the ring gear... sportsman sd6005... they are richmond gears http://www.ok4wd.com/index.php/catalog/product/richmond_sportsman_ring__pinion_gears/

That sucks, Richmond makes good gears. I think I would get another set of gears and send them to Bobby Long to cryo them ($45).

BTW, its possible the teeth had started to give way before they finally broke. You may have started cracking some of them earlier in the day when you were harder on it.
