Geronimo: 1959 Chevy Apache

1959 Chevy Apache long bed Fleetside with some modern stuff inside. Built for long trips
Damn, did you see Gene Winfield is going to be there?

Daisy Duke for that matter too. Lol

Yup, he was there last year too. They were chopping the top of a car on site. Pretty awesome seeing a 92 year old guy swinging that body hammer and then switching off to the torch while all the other guys involved were watching him work.

He was at Eastwood in alsip two winter's ago. I took the two day class with him.
It was cool.

Crank pulley is off (that was fun) timing cover is off and I'm taking that along with the oil pan and valley cover over for powder coating this afternoon

When they inevitably powder coat a gasket surface you didn't want coated, go to Lowes or home depot and get a quart of this stuff, apply and let it sit for 5-15 minutes and then wipe the coating off, might have to do it twice. Way better than scraping or sanding that stuff off. Just be careful, even one drop will immediately turn the coating dull. I carefully apply it with a foam brush and then throw it away.

Thank you so much!

Got parts back from powdercoat and a whole bunch of stuff from Rock Auto. Scored some cool valve covers at the swap meet last weekend.

Got the block finally degreased. Taped off the gasket areas and orifices. Cleaned the block and heads with a wire brush, scraper, flathead screw driver. Chiseled off some of the heavy rust scale. More wire brushing and scraping.

Then I washed it down and sprayed it with Duplicolor base coat silver flake. Then sprayed it with this anodized green paint that Duplicolor has. It's good to 500 degrees.

Started installing some gaskets and parts earlier this week.

Very nice!

One of the things I like about the 66 is the Apline Green engine color. I've always thought it was neat how they used to paint the engines a different color depending on displacement.

You can't tear it apart far enough to change the cam and not change the cam can you? ;)

So how do those SBC valve cover adapters work?
There is a rectangle ring that bolts down to the head. The LS valve covers were center bolt pattern. The adapter uses the factory LS valve cover gasket. Then the adapter has threaded studs and you put the SBC valve covers down with SBC valve cover gaskets. The adapters have a 2nd set of holes in case you wanted to use early SBC valve covers that have the staggered bolt pattern.

Yes, yes you can lol. I don't want to go down that rabbit's hole just yet. Later on once this thing has been running and driving, then I can play around with adding more power

You got anything that illustrates this? I would be interested to see the different colors/displacements

Ive been on vacation this week and it sure has been busy. It all started with a guy leaving a note in the door of my dad's house last week. He spotted my rusty 1959 apache truck at my Dads house. Left his name and number. I called him back. This truck was in way too bad of shape for what he was looking to do. But it got my dad and I to start talking about parting it out. The bed was already unbolted, so I decided to put that on Facebook marketplace. In a few hours, I had it sold. Within 2 days, I had 20 people asking about it. But several were asking about the rest of the truck.

I went over there and removed the bumpers and mounting brackets. Im using the brackets for my project but I sold the bumpers and some other extra parts to a guy. The next day I took the doors off and a guy from Michigan got those. The next day we lifted the front end off. I might turn that into a Wall art piece and sell it. I'm going to use the hood for my project. We also took off the camper shell and bed. Guy is coming on Sunday to get the bed.

In between all of this, I made a trip to Indiana to get a set of Astro Supreme wheels and thin white walls. My brother mounted 2 up for me, but I'm waiting on the special lug nuts to get delivered before I can see how well they fit.

I got word from my body guy, that my front fenders are nearly done.

I spent most of another day on the firewall. I figured now would be a good time to give it a coat of paint. I removed all the road tar that was on it, sanded it, and then primed and painted it. The inside of the engine bay will be white. I want this Engine to pop.

Yesterday was the big day. I bolted the trans to the engine. Got the motor mounts all set up. Got impatient waiting for my brother to get off work, and went ahead and dropped it all in by myself.

Last night my brother and I worked on getting the transmission crossmember to fit better. We then drilled the mounting holes and I took it back out so that today I can prime and paint it.

I've been slacking on the updates.

Trans crossmember is in and the motor trans are bolted down in the chassis.

Got the front sheet metal on and started trying to get some good gaps. Had to space the front of the cab up 1/2" but things are looking pretty good for now.

Also put on 2 of the new tires/ wheels just to see how things looked. Front fender clearance is very tight. I might be ok though.

Buttoned up a few things under the hood. Power steering is all done. 87 c10 hoses hook right up to the 2005 steering pump.

Bolted down the intake and fuel rails. And then moved on to the brake pedal, booster, master cylinder, and proportioning valve.

Exhaust manifolds are on order and I ordered the gas tank today

I have been following this build from the beginning and I have to say my second favourite truck is the 1955-57, but my favorite is the 1958-59 with dual headlights.
I love the character, the lines are great and it has a muscle truck appearance. :pimp::waytogo::saweet:

So I'm a big dummy. Last night I realized a 4l60e and 4l80e transmissions require different flywheels.....I guess I will be taking this transmission back out....
