GM Crate Motor Differences?

You know Darren, for you, maybe it would be easiest/best to do a upgraded TBI motor. Get the L31 long block, make it TBI, and get a custom DYNO TUNED chip for it. I dunno. Could be the Best choice as far as being legal and not really modifying anything.

Now you are trying to convince me of what i was trying to convince everyone else... :doah::haha:

I seem to have the LS bug again. Some of my big LS hurdles seem to have been solved recently by aftermarket brackets, etc.

The custom dyno TBI chip business makes me more nervous than running a BD Turnkey program on an LS, truthfully.

Got an email into BD, gonna call him today or tmr. May pull the trigger and make this happen....

Ultimately, in the end, i do think you will be most satisfied with the 6.0. I just figured if you werent comfortable with it, you could probably do some pretty good upgrades that would get you by.

Yep. Your input in much appreciated.

Spoke with Bryan at BD Turnkey tonight. He was really helpful, and willing to answer a lot of my questions. I think that was an expensive phone call.....

Time to put together a parts/prices list on stuff i'd need.

The LS swap is sounding a lot more doable though now....

Any setup will work for smog in Cali for $250 every two years :D

Harder and harder to pull that off now a days.

Also, i think mine gets test only smog every year now.

Luckily, its not til the fall, so i get some time to get a swap figured out.

The other thing is, if you are getting a bd setup, you really wont have a bunch more out of pocket expenses. Motor mounts, flex plate spacer(i think you still need it with the 4l80?), radiator hoses, fans, exhaust, ac bracket, and the little things like a throttle cable if you get dbc and heater hoses, etc. Getting the bd setup is going to make your swap a cake walk! I know i could easily gwt one on the road in a weekend if it was an older truxk with dbc. Yours, and if you get dbw, will take you realistically 3 weeks of dedication, but not killing yourself.

Running some quick numbers, amazing how quickly you pass the $4k mark.

At about $4500. Yes, there are some changes i can make, but nothing major.

Going to sleep on it, although getting the run video from BD in my email makes it very tempting....

Although this thread looks like it's going LS, why pay $400 for an intake when you can get this for $139 http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-226018/media/images and this for $42? http://www.summitracing.com/parts/trd-2210

I assume none are CARB legal, but I don't know that for certain. EGR is a pain with the Vortec setup, just an FYI.
your the 2nd person that has said the egr is a pain on vortec setup,,,i dont doubt this,,just dont know why ???could you shed a little light on this ??thanks

There is no exhaust crossover on the Vortec heads, thus the exhaust has to be routed to the intake from the actual exhaust pipes/manifolds/headers via a pipe.

And since it's clearly visible, if you were trying to "fool" someone into thinking it wasn't a different motor or setup, it's a no-go.

TBI specific intake, Corvette flex line to route EGR gasses, adapter to mate the pipe to the exhaust, welding adapter to pipe, already easily into it $500. When looking at an LS-series swap vs. sticking with the SBC but Vortec heads, that's not an insignificant cost.

I'd like to cast the biggest vote I possibly can for a 5.3L or 6.0L.

IMO, your previous estimate of engine cost is WAY high, I'd shop that as much as you can. IMO, the prices I've seen are closer to half what you posted.

I think your crazy. Good money at bad. As Chris said, the figure you posted on your other thread is over $1000 more than you need to spend. But, if you just cant bring yoursef to do it, the tbi motors arent the worst thing ever.

Darren, if you go 6.0 what if anything must your do with your DRAC?

My drac? Next to nothing. There is a bit of input to the computer from the drac i think? But, overall, its almost totally independent of the motor/computer.

If this trucks wasn't my weekend dd and tow rig, i'd still be after the 6.0.

But, currently, i'm looking into having someone else install this crate motor for me. I REALLY want to do it myself, but just don't have the time to make it happen quick enough to not impact my use of the truck.

That is the major reason. I appreciate everyone's feedback on this, its really made me think long and hard about this.

That being said, anyone have the answer to my question above?
