Electric vehicles are the future. No two ways about it. Rivian, Ford, GM, Tesla, Lordstown, now GMC//Hummer. All of them are coming out with electric trucks in the next couple of years.

I can only imagine what the new Hummer is going to cost. They are already marketing it towards the luxury crowd which is why they are doing it under GMC.

The overlanders will be early adopters of all these electric trucks. Rivian showed one at overland expo west last year.

Still the article lists somebody from inside gm stating the technology is "scalable" and can will be used for other vehicles. GM is planning on at least 20 all electric vehicles by 2023. Electric vehicles are coming for sure.

I'll be curious to see how well these things work out. In a couple of years my silverado will have over 200k miles on it and I'll be looking to replace it and I gotta say that the idea of no gas or oil change bill is kind of appealing. But this is tech beyond my comfort zone (and I work in technology) and not being able to turn a wrench on any of these things scares me.

Maybe this will not look like hammered dog shit! Either way, hopefully all these manufactures battling will give us some good options when it comes to the day of electric being the only option!

Last I heard, GM is planning on 100% electric fleet within 3 years. I'm working on some of the chips they need to make that happen as we speak.
I find these type of statements interesting.
I really wonder is the mass population is ready for a complete switch over. 3 years is quick. I really wonder what supply and demand is going to be. (I realize that's just gm-but as a whole.)
I feel the same about fully autonomous revolution. I get that manufacturers are doing it, but is it TRUELY welcomed?

I think the country will need some serious infrastructure and grid upgrades to accommodate all of these planned electric vehicles. Not only that, get ready for some new form of taxation when all of the politicians realize how much gas tax revenue is being lost. I love the idea of electric cars but I think we still have a ways to go before they can replace the gas burners we depend on now.

Check. Check. And check.
And they passed the bills forcing the change.... typical.

Yeah, I thought that was a pretty quick timeframe when they told me. If I had to guess, I'd say they'll miss their goal, but that only means it will be delayed a year or two.

As far as autonomous vehicles go, I've worked on a few chips for that too, also coming whether we like it or not. This is seen as a safety issue. Almost all accidents are caused by human error. The goal is to eliminate that.

No saying your wrong. But I know a large amount of people against it. It really just will be interesting to see how it all plays out in the coming years.

How long will it be before someone hacks the car's computer. It will all be run by the computer, steering, brakes, acceleration, self driving, self parking?

Interesting...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_electric_vehicle
In the United States by the turn of the [20th] century, 40 percent of automobiles were powered by steam, 38 percent by electricity, and 22 percent by gasoline. A total of 33,842 electric cars were registered in the United States, and the U.S. became the country where electric cars had gained the most acceptance.[31] Most early electric vehicles were massive, ornate carriages designed for the upper-class customers that made them popular. They featured luxurious interiors and were replete with expensive materials. Sales of electric cars peaked in the early 1910s.

In order to overcome the limited operating range of electric vehicles, and the lack of recharging infrastructure, an exchangeable battery service was first proposed as early as 1896.[32] The concept was first put into practice by Hartford Electric Light Company through the GeVeCo battery service and initially available for electric trucks.

I agree on the infrastructure upgrades being of most importance from service stations to the grid actually being able to handle demand but I'm all for it. I'll keep my gas vehicles for pleasure

The last IC vehicles will be diesels. When battery technology can't provide the 500kWh you need to tow over the mountain in a size that allows passengers or cargo, just throw a 40 gallon diesel tank on instead.
