I still wheel the Q jet that originally came on my truck and I put it through more than most, I've had my truck on end a bunch of times. It gets the job done and doesn't hold me back.

I didn't say there was anything wrong with a carburetor. EFI is better. That isn't an opinion.

EFI being better than a Q-jet IS an opinion. EFI is WAY more complex (even compared to GM TBI), there are still plenty of electrical components that won't allow the engine to run if they fail or don't get power.

For the record, I am switching to propane in the near future but it isn't really a necessity for the truck, the Q-jet hasn't ever kept me from making an obstacle.

Since when is EFI a ford thing and Carbs a GM thing lol ????

Just using it as a comparison on the varied opinions of what is the best setup.

Thats sounds like a good idea as well but sounds like a lot more work retrofitting a new engine and tranny in vs the TBI setup. Anyone know of a writeup on this swap?

Look at many of the truck AND car mags online . The LS swap has been king for several years :D

For less than the price of some of these aftermarket injection systems, you could have an entire ls gen III engine and trans.
Hey, I'm where your at right now and last week I picked up a 5.3 w/ 4l60e for $1200.
The swap meet today had 5.3 for $1500 and a 6.0 for $1800.
These are complete engines with way more potenial than that of the past.
Just another direction to look at all's I'm say'in.

x2. I cant say it enough. The new efi technology is leagues beyond even tpi injection systems, makes incredible power with bolt on mods that are relatively pretty cheap for the gain in hp. There was an article I recently saw where I think car-craft put a cam in a stock motor, with a tune and netted 105hp(cant remember exact number but it was def 100+). cam cost $500, tune $250. On top of that, like it was mentioned before, you can find these motors especially the 5.3 for dirt cheap. If I were to do another swap into my cucv, I have no doubt I could do it for less than $1500.

Dont let the tech scare you off of the decision, there are stand alone harnesses that are plug and play, motor mount kits to make it bolt up and lots of other parts that are being made to make this swap a piece of cake.

400HP , is STOCK Escalade horsepower !!!!!!

Just pulling a 5.3 from a junkyard truck and sticking a carb on it gets you 343hp on a dyno , more to be found with tuning , new heads , and EFI .

These motors were Gods gift to bowtie fans , and soon enough they will be as cheap as a gen 1 SB to buy ....... I can't wait .

I'm amazed no one has mentioned Howell EFI yet, they offer both tbi and mpfi kits that are very reasonably priced, customizable and easily servicable. Fwiw, Howell's mpfi kit is just a little over half the cost of the Edelbrock kit.

I bought a 93 suburban with a fairly new goodwrench motor in it. Pulled the whole thing with the help of a friend and bought a harness from howell, new computer and chip. easy swap 99% plug and play and way easy with the old harness still in tact then the suburban was sold off, could have easily ended up with a cost of Zero dollars.

No TBI doesn't give the utmost in horsees but it is easy to understand, you can get parts anywhere, changing injectors is a snap.

I have been using it for 2 to 3 years and done nothing but change oil.

Gen 3 motors are where its at,

330-400 base hp depending on motor of choice, aluminum heads, easy to service, data port thats easy to read, 6 bolt mains, mini starters, higher amp alternators, wiring that is not 14-22 years old.. lots of reasons.

Just helped a friend pull of a 6.0 from a wrecked 07 chevy with 39k on it for 550.00 a month ago.

Well as an update I've been searching local and I think I can get a whole drivetrain for 1500. I think it is time to swap to some new technology.

Well as an update I've been searching local and I think I can get a whole drivetrain for 1500. I think it is time to swap to some new technology.

New technology can be a budget option? As long as the whole drivetrain is in good condition. Not sure if the new technology is as affordable when rebuilding time comes around?

The old school EFI systems have affordable aftermarket support and some FREEWARE programs http://www.tunerpro.net/ for tuning. Companies like Moates.net http://www.moates.net/ support old school EFI with products that will allow "while you drive" tuning and PROM flashing like the OBD II ECM's.

I've yet to see the "new technology" FREEWARE anything for tuning? New school tuning software is available form sources like http://www.hptuners.com/ What I will say ... some people hold on to old school technology because they can afford the old school stuff (EFI or Carburetors) and because some people can do very well at tuning the old school stuff themselves on a budget.

On a budget of less than $1000 I was able to build my 454 MPFI, which included a good used gas thirsty 454 Engine, used 1999 454 Suburban Vortec Induction System (Intake / Injectors), and Engine Management System ( 1991 Camaro Speed Density computer, distributor, wiring harness, and all the sensors). For an additional $50 I could upgrade to an ECM that would allow using a 4L80E.:D

I know when the next decade comes around, I'll have to upgrade to the new school stuff. I hope by the next decade the new school will be even cheaper, and better supported by the aftermarket?

When it comes to dollars for horsepower, what you can do for yourself is a key factor.

Glad to see someone else has went with Howell electronics.
I'm new at this and that's who I chose.
Stand-alone harness and PCM for $850, I did'nt think that was too bad.
