What nobody on this site seems to realize is that most 60's need work too. So you have the ~$1000 up front then you need bearings/kingpins/u-joints, possibly rotors/hubs etc. Turns into a LOT more money than people tend to think about at first.

Exactly. Building up a 10 bolt on a wheeling rig with large tires and a V8 is polishing a turd, at the end of the day you have spent money on a weak link that will fail you.

a stock 60 will beat a built 10 bolt any day, spend money where it counts. Repack the bearings and maybe through some new seals at the 10 bolt but hold out for a 60 before spending good money on u joints, shafts or lockers.
 
ok i dont mean to be harsh but let me end this. i will be fixing the 44 for a few hundred bucks, i WONT buy a 60. for what i want i dont need one. i have plenty of faith in the 44. Been running one in our bogger with 4.10s and 39.5 tsl's and only broke one u joint (autozone chit), we keep it in 4 lo all the time too. and that includes a launch off a 3 foot jump with lots of skinny pedal ( broke other things just not the axle). just got to be a little smart with it. i have plenty of faith in my 44 for the price ill have into it.

on the other hand i picked up a complete rough country 4 inch lift kit BRAND NEW for 250 bucks. still had the shipping tags on it. came with some cheapo shocks, shock mounting hardware, 5 leaf front springs, rear blocks that i dont need, raised steering arm, u bolts, the whole nine yards. ill use everything but the rear lift stuff as i have a shackle flip.

this weekend is the big Sticks Of Romeo bog, were taking our s blazer and a buddys bronco. Trucks Gone Wild will be there filming. must have at least 36's and be trailered to get past the gates, it should be pretty nuts. prolly wont make any progress on this truck. hopefully have some good shots of the s blazer in the bog tho
 
Didn't mean to start a pissing contest, if your planning on playing in the mud I see no reason not to keep the 44, they survive pretty well in a limited traction environment. I thought you were building a trail rig, not a mud rig. In my experience 44s and 10b's explode when they are locked and get bound up. I've seen ring gears, pinions , knuckles and ball joints destroyed on rigs with 37" tires in rock crawling and semi-technical trail wheeling, if that's not the terrain you will be wheeling then have at with your girly axle :flipoff7:


The build looks good, I would have loved to start with a sand blasted frame :thumb:

Yes built 60s are pricey and people on off road forums that think they are gold. but stock 1 ton rusted out junkers that still are running for about a grand. I bought my 60 for 150 bucks from a yard. My buddy just bought an 88 1 ton srw for 650 and it still ran! It just had no floor and the sides were Swiss cheese.
 
no biggy guys just wanted to make clear why i was keeping the 44. this isnt going to be a "trail" or a "mud" rig or a DD, just a good truck to use when and for whatever i want.

thanks for the compliments guys, this friday is payday so more progress will be made soon!

Yea... D60's are ALWAYS a grand, minimum, around here.

Unless it's still under a 1-ton truck.... then the whole truck is $800. :haha:
I have yet to figure out how a truck devalues a D60. :thinking:
 
heres a pic of said bogger after the last local run....end of the day we hit a jump, people said the front got a good 3 ft of air and the rear got a good 2ft. ended up splitting one of the front pinion shims in half and wasting the front leaves haha but shes back together and ready for Trucks Gone Wild this weekend!

well trucks gone wild was a bust, long story short they cut off trucks early cause they got so full to fast.

anyways, i got all the stuff to do the 44, just have to find the time to do it :doah:started back at school so between work and school and side jobs im swamped. hopefully by the end of the weekend ill have it under the truck....hopefully. then onto the drive train! my uncles got a few small block goodies for me at family price.....:woot:. ill keep this updated as best as possible
 
the dunes got me going on the truck some more. new pinion seal, tube seals, ball joints and u joints are in. just need to get new rotors and dust seals, then slap a coat of paint on everything then its ready to be reassembled! once the front axle is done and under the frame ill put some pics up of this darn sexy rolling chassis.

o and my uncle is hooking me up with an accel dizzy and weiand intake for the 350:woot:
 
Sounds good man...you are in school...I'm 43 married with two kids I still got no money for building trucks.:haha:

When I was younger I spent to sh$t load on my cars trucks ect...
Now I wish I had some of that cash I spent... I'd be loaded.:D

Just take you time and build something nice that you would like to keep.
Then you will be golden!

You did a great job on grandpas old truck, keep it up!:thumb:

my buddy has a line on 4 37" humvee tires85% tread on aluminum wheels for 500 bucks might be coming home with them if i like them. should fit with my paint scheme nicely and a pretty good deal at that i think.
 
should be pickin up some hummer tires and some 10 wide steelies for an even better price of 400. the aluminums he has are ugly as hell. hes asking 400 so i may get them even cheaper.... ill get some new pics up one of these days :doah:
 
got the hummer tires and aluminum wheels from the guy. my donor motor is focked, so the 355 with the rv cam in my red truck is going in this. building a new motor for the red truck over this winter and spring. front axle is o so close to going under the chassis, got a good pay check coming so it may happen soon. once my rolling chassis is done i can start tearing into my parts c10 for the body, then when im ready for the motor ill steal it from the red truck and put the red truck away for the winter. my patience is running thin already with this budget of mine! idk how some of you guys do it! is there a smiley animation pulling his hair out? :haha:
 
IM SOOOOO GLAD you chose not to beat on the red truck and put it away for winters :waytogo:. Even if it has to lose a motor.... :whistle:
