Everyone who has a rig that is a good street rig as well as a trail rig, post up!
I decided today that I am going to stick with 35" tires for a while and I want to work on reliability more than a hardcore crawler. Mostly just want to keep it so I can drive up the trails around here and do some camping.

So show me what you got!

Not a great street rig, but I drive it 45 miles or so to the closest trails often. I drive it to work from time to time as well. It's mostly street leagal too :wink1:

Mine wont be done till next year and I dont have pics yet but it'll be good for trail/mild crawling/DD. I'll list the specs now and subscribe so I can post pics when it's done (next spring hopefully).

1990 R2500 Burb
Convert to 4wd with a D44 upfront
350/465/203/205 w/cable triple sticks
Stock ratio axles for road driving
air locker in back
going with a 10-12k winch (dont know if it'll be perm mount or not)
dual alts/batts
OBA
looking for a donor K5 to graft on removeable top
mild rollcage
shackle swap in rear
52" spring swap in front
crossover steering
looking at 35" tires but might go as big as 37"

and if the wife lets me, Ranger OD for a total of 24 different gear options (HOLY DRIVETRAINS CABLEDAWG!)

I've already got most of the parts, but I wont have everyhting till next spring and I want to do it all at once (especially the 4wd conversion and doubler). I'm going to start taking the kids to Tuttle Creek in Kansas, but the boys want to do TTC someday, so this is my startup rig.:D

Thats pretty bad ass! I think my goal is to stick with 35-37" tires, swap my 10 bolt rear for a 14bff with 4.56 gears and either a detroit or ARB locker. Would like to buy that 10 bolt front from you JMS :D Then just need a decent front and rear bumper set up and some sliders. I want to build a rear sleeping area/storage in the rear of my K5 something with a bed on top and slide out storage compartments.

when my rig is done, im hoping it will meet this description. drivetrain is pretty standard fair for most on here.

6.2L diesel/NV4500/NP208/DRW D60/D70HD w/4.10gears/38in radial TSL's on H1 beadlock rims.

the only thing in that i may wind up changing is the TC. the NP208 is great for now, but id like a Lo-max NP205 with a gear driven 3:1 ratio. may also go atlas if money gets better. 4:1 ratio anyone??? :) but then id probably need custom driveshafts and whatnot.

Will most likely do 52's up front, and a shackle flip in the rear. ford superduty shocks, and zero rates up front to level the suspension because of the weight of the diesel. crossover steering will of course be required. Ill be putting detroit lockers front and rear, disk brake conversion on the D70HD, which will require a TC e-brake.

I will also probably wind up doing a 12v conversion on the truck, keeping the two alternator setup to power an onboard welding setup and power center with 12v and 120v outlets. and swapping to a serpentine accessory drive setup.

Ill be replacing the plastic toolbox in the back with a custom designed and built one to house a wide variety of emergency tools and equpment.

and of course... throwing a turbo on that anemic 6.2L diesel.

then its just a matter of the full convertable body swap :D

anyway, thats my plan, and my idea of the perfect well rounded street legal trail rig.

Wrong brand, here it is...........................

78 Bronco XLT
High comp 429/C6/205
35" Maxxis Bighorns
4.56 gears
Limited slip, front and rear
4" lift

I drive it on 300 mile round trips.

here's my '89. 2.5" softride springs, 35" bfgs, 4.56s. it was my dd until the rust got too bad and i bought my new cummins 3 years ago. it was mostly set up for surf fishing and light trail riding. now it's sitting in the driveway, gutted, waiting for me to finish restoring all the rust and repaint.

Omg I never new anyone on njfourwheeler with a fullsize had a reasonably size truck!

Hmmmm..................I didnt even think about sliders. I dont plan on getting hung on any huge rocks, but never can be too sure. Besides it'll give me something to anchor the rollcage. Tube doors would be nice for summertime. I might replace the front d-shaft with one of those slick square tube deals. And I'll need something for the spare tire and gas cans. Bumpers should be replaced so I can bump stuff without destoying the body. And the inverter to run the comm equipment fro chasing storms next year.

You know most people get mortgages for houses, I'll need one to finish my truck............................

I guess mine sorta fits the bill. It's a 90 with 3" TC Softride fronts and flipped rear with 56's. I run a 1" body lift also. Right now it's on 37's and Walker Evans beadlocks. Has the usual D60 with a Powerlock, 35 spline all the way, Rockcrusher flanges, 4.10's, and crossover with hydro assist. The back is a 14 bolt with Detroit. Has a crate tbi 350, th400, clocked flat 241 with SYE and a 1350 High angle shaft. Front is a home brew square tube with a 1480 D60 joint at the case and 1410 on the axle. Full cage with PRP seats and a ton of other things. It was driven on the street and was a daily driver as needed up untill the end of June of this year. Now it is trail only. This pic was from before the 56's in the rear.

My shortbed pickup is currently on blocks in the garage getting the following:

14FF rear with Detroit
D60 front
4.10 gears
Crossover steering
4" Alcan front springs
Shackle flip rear
35" BFG Muds
Dual bedside 60" toolboxes
Tube bumpers
York OBA

Already has a 6.2L diesel with a Banks turbo, dual fuel tanks, and a BTO 700R4 so it's got good mileage/range.

The breather tubes for the tranny and axles have all been run up to a little collector manifold and then a single tube runs up to a high point.

I have no electrics that need any extra H20 protection (lights, glowplugs, fuel solenoid, TCC lockup signal, and starter are all that exist under the hood).

I would like to go with an external-reservoir PS pump that would seal up better than stock eventually. I've also considered a simple snorkel that could be easily added trailside.

I've got some 2" square tube and plan to fab up a receiver crapper seat.

I feel like this should be a really reliable and dependable rig good for extended highway and trail use when I'm done with it.

Feel kind of bad posting this because its been out of commission so long. But what you're looking for is exactly what I built this for. Seeing that I've hunted/fished with 2 wheel drive open diff pickups for the last 20 years without issues, its a little overbuilt for my needs. But it should be perfect for weekend trips with just enough offroad capability to get me in trouble. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel on the build and realistically will have it running in the next month or so.

tube bumpers / 4" spring lift, 4.10 3/4 tons with a detroit in the 14bff / 400sb/th350/np205 / 37" hummer radials.

couple of pics when before I tore the drivetrain and suspension out and in stock form on 32's. I was regularly running 300 mile round trips in it.

I daily drive my '73, but it definitely isn't UA material...yet.

Specs in the sig. To be a real trail running rig to me, i'd need 1-tons, 37-40", lift, cage, bumpers, etc. etc. For now I just jump in it and drive it.:D

My blazer a couple years ago before most of the body damage was a great highway driver, rode nice steered nice etc. 40" Iroks kind of wear out fast, but I drove this to Moab twice. Montana a couple times, central Idaho. All over the place only problem I really had was the holes on the trans that hold the adaptor to the tranny stripped the threads, the adaptor seperated an inch or so. Had to add more tranny fluid every 40 miles or so

Mine should be pretty good and reliable, just need a few more beefy items like 35 spline stubs, rear disc brakes and a some ARB lockers

I'll get around to doing the interior nicely and then add some amenities like an ARB fridge and stuff like that.

Then maybe some 42" mtr's

Are those 56's up front? Oh and what's up with the Jeep style crossover with the draglink attached to the tie-rod? Did it work out for ya'?
