Goodyear military tires

Yeah I like the look of the RT better also. And you have good experience with them in the mud. How thick are the sidewalls on the ones you have.

from what I can recall they are stupid thick... 10 ply or something crazy. I bought them because I wanted to be able to drive over and through stuff without worry of puncturing a tire... I never had an issue with them, and I drove over plenty of junk/scrap/trees/rocks/cactus/mesquite thorns... never one problem with those tires...

Also, as for the recentering the H1's... I am pretty sure if you go cross over steering you can clear a stock H1... From what I remember. I was looking into it, but decided to go with my WAY offset 15" rock crawlers for my TSL's in 15" flavor...

dont take my word for it... research or ask someone else that knows for sure, but might worth asking.

Just a warning. My 36in militaries only measure 33.5 on 10in rim. And the 37s measure 35.5 on an 8in rim.

Sure glad you guys mentioned that! 37 was already on the small side for what I wanted. I really wanted 40" but was gonna settle with 37's for the price but if there only really 35's that's a little small for me. I guess ill be hunting some 38-40" tires that are reasonably priced.

Anyone know of some inexpensive tires in that size that are a 16.5 rim? Lots of use in mud, snow and rock. Probm get some swampers if I can find a good deal.

No such animal. Hardly anyone makes 16.5" tires anymore. You'd have to just luck into a set of used Swampers, Mickey T's, Pitbulls, etc.

For reference:

Goodyear Wrangler RT/II's 36x12.5-16.5 bias plies. The very first tire the HMMWV came with. Good in the mud, not so good offroad. Mine were about 34-34.5" tall on narrow rims.

Goodyear MT 37x12.5R16.5 Radials. Okay offroad. About as good as any late 80's-90's radial mud. Not a Swamper but won't beat you up going down the road.

Those are the two older treads, this is the new one.

Sorta. These are the BFG Baja's in 37x12.5R16.5. They are limited use. MOST HMMWV's in use now are getting the 1st gen Goodyear Wrangler MT/R in 37x12.5R16.5.
Neither of these is common in the surplus market at all since the military is still removing the two older designs from older HMMWV's and replacing them with the MT/R's and Baja's.

I know interco still makes 16.5 tires. I wanted to stay in that size because I plan to get re-centered h1 rims. Is it worth it or should I go to a 17 rim and pay the larger amoubnt for bead locks and not have a double?

16.5's are a dying breed. You won't find such a thing as a "inexpensive tires" in the size range you want, especially 38-40" tires. Unless you find used.

the 36-12.50s have 4 ply sidewalls and 6 ply tread and even with crossover you will not clear stock h1s unless you swap to dually hubs or use spacers. I know cause I tried and even with a 1" spacer the wheel rubbed the tie rod ends bad enough to where you couldnt spin it by hand.

just like ajmblazer said 16.5s are a dying breed and inexpensive tires done exist imo. even "cheap" tires are expensive anymore.

I had a set of the 36-12.50s on recentered h1s cause I got them used cheap and they work ok but I recently sold my h1s to get away from 16.5s just because tire selection is so limited. I want to dont really want pitbulls or swampers even though they are good tires I would rather run some maxxis creepy crawlers or similar and you cannot get them in a 16.5.

the hummer tires are generally cheap compared to other tires and I agree that they work fairly well for cheap tires but there are so many better choices. I will run mine until I save up for what I want or find a good deal on some used ones.

I may just have to suck it up and pay more for tires. I really like the double bead lock h1 re-centered rims that are DOT approved. Choices choices! If I dont run the military tires I will run swampers, l have had good luck with them in the past.

Ok, I'm going to hijack a bit here, I didn't think any beadlocks where approved for on road use.
Has this changed?

H1 rims are oem on humvee's thus dot approved. They are even stamped with dot approval, and they are a double bead lock. Even paying to have them re-centered they are less expensive than other bead locks that are not dot approved.

Which beadlocks are you pointing out as not DOT approved?

And H1's still bend VERY easily, they are good wheels and having double beadlocks is awesome but they usually need to be re-centered and they still need a ring welded onto them to keep them from bending.

Although H1's need a rock ring and re-centering they are still less than 180 each, and you can even find them used (rarely) for even less. If your a decent welder you can weld your own rock rings on and re-center them yourself.

There are many bead lock wheels that are not DOT approved.

Which beadlocks are you pointing out as not DOT approved?

Can you confirm one that IS? I don't think the DOT has approved any beadlock wheel not made by Hutchinson. Many others start out as DOT approved wheels and then are heavily modified. I read somewhere that this voids the approval, but practically speaking, recentering an H1 should do the same.

re-centered H1's are DOT approved because the modification doesn't affect the bead locks in anyway. Adding a rock ring doesn't void a DOT approval. I had a friend pulled over by California Highway Patrol, giving him a hard time about tire width, ride height and a list of other infractions. He was going to ticket him for the bread locks as well but when we saw the DOT stamped into the rim he didn't think twice about waving that infraction.

He still got nailed with a list of others:doah:

Pretty much all radial tires are smaller than the advertised height. So the 37s are still pretty much 2 inches bigger than radial 35s.

Blue, in your sig you say you have a fixed yoke 208, did you drill and tap for the fixed yoke or get the fixed yoke shaft? there is an inexpensive kit to add a fixed yoke without the cost and change in the output shaft and was wondering if anyone has done this versus swapping the output shafts.

Ok so these tires are not desirable, cost almost as much with shipping as my 37x12.50x15 did and I have found that 16.5 tires are hard to find locally and expensive. I have a rear 14 bolt and front 44 8 lug. Would there be any clearance problems with an 8 lug 15" rim, versus going up to a 17" rim?
