Got any cool tools lately?

While the exhaust and vacuum leak checking I have done in the past, with smoke machine. I think it would have to be a big ass leak in a ac system. Maybe if iI suspected the evaporator, I would use smoke.

Had a leak on the El Dorado AC system. Evacuated the system and hooked the smoke up to it. A hose was leaking at an old fitting. We saw it when I turned the shop lights off and ran a flashlight around. It was a tiny leak. Re-crimped the fitting and it was good the go. Beats spending money to recharge with die when it has leaked to nothing over a few days.

I picked up another Gearwrench ratchet off of Amazon. 90t 1/2” drive. Needed to retire my current one as it’s one of the few tools I got from my Grandpa. It’s a Dayton brand that’s long gone and the tool is every bit of 50+ years old.

The new one has a nice grip that fits my bear paw hands and the ratchet mechanism is nice and smooth. The 120 tooth version is nicer but I can’t justify the cost for my usage.

Three of the extra Gearwrench wrenches came in that I needed to complete my set.

Has Gearwrench changed? They used to be sold in Sears as the cheaper alternative to Craftsman.

There was a Gearwrench tool truck running around in Colorado when I left there.

I looked at the Pro Eagle 3 ton. Plastic wheels also, at twice the price.

  • High capacity, non-pneumatic, composite wheels for durable, high capacity lifting

I would be pissed if I paid $600 for something with plastic wheels. But not having to maintain air is a plus. Steel in that size would make it really heavy.

I may get a HF one for rolling around on my rocks to support a trailer every now and then. But how will I wake my neighbors up at 2 am?

To me they have. Or it could be that Craftsman has gone down hill since the brand has been sold a couple of times since the Sears demise.

We had a Gearwrench tool truck coming by the dealership for a few years before I left. The stuff was pretty good for a hobby guy like me, but seemed to do good business with the Techs or else they wouldn’t have been coming back around.

There’s no doubt in my mind Snap-on, Mac and other pro brands do have better stuff, but this is better than the old stuff I’ve had forever. If I was making my living with them I’d go on the tool truck.

I bought my first set of Gear Wrench in early 93, used them daily 8+ hours and over time, all still work and still use. Lost the 8mm and got a replacement.
Regular combo ratcheting box end.
Ratchet handles are personal preference, I prefer chrome, the soft grip is so hard to clean.

I dont know about the craftsman branded gear wrenches... they had the canted heads and the lil itsy bitsy flip lever to change direction????

I Spent my money on the gear wrench branded ones with no tiny ratchet levers to fail. NO complaints and years of use on them.
