Picked my truck up from having 4.88’s and lockers installed. Detroit in the rear and true trac up front. Accelerating and coasting are fine but if I ease off the gas just a touch, like trying to adjust speed a bit, I get this horrible grinding sound. I pulled over once and didn’t see anything and when I got home I noticed some fluid coming out of the rear diff breather tube. I can put my hand on the housing and hold it there for a second or two. It sounds like it might be coming from the transfer case but can’t tell for certain. At one point I put it in neutral and let it coast and it was doing it then to. But if left in gear and get off the accelerator completely it doesn’t do it. These aren’t the best videos but it’s pretty easy to pick up the sound. I haven’t had much time to play with it because of family time. I’m hoping it’s transfer case so I don’t have to drive it another 30 miles back to the shop like this.

That was after 30 miles at speeds between 55-70. Seems odd to me to. It’s going back if nothing more than to double check everything but in the mean time I figure it can’t hurt to get a second opinion.

Take it back. That is not right. If they tell you it needs to be "broke in", ask them why they did not do it or give you instructions on doing it.

Check that they got the driveshaft was tightened also.

They did break it in. I asked that. I'm going to poke around underneath it today and see what I can see. It's going back for sure, just gotta find the time.

They've already been told and video sent to them. Just don't know if it'll be tomorrow or Monday before I take it.

Played with it today. I’m almost convinced it’s the transfer case. Jack the rear end up and spin the shafts and there’s a steady ticking noise coming from the transfer case in 2wd or 4hi and 4lo. There’s no noise coming from the axles. Still taking it in tomorrow but I think it’s going to end up a waste of time.

If they really did break the gears in, they would have driven in 4WD, so it's possible something in the front is making noise. However, it's unlikely they paid a guy to do any more driving than a couple thermal cycles. It's also unlikely they would observe the symptoms you describe and hand it back. So their break-in was probably done with no-load on a lift.

It's possible a U-joint has gone bad and the timing is just a coincidence (or you just didn't notice it before). That's the best case. Worst case is that they didn't set the gears right or didn't get the pinion tight on final assembly, whereby the gears could already be bad.

I wouldn't touch anything myself before taking it back - other than to make sure the T-case is really in 2HI and the front end is really unlocked.

I’ve verified the t case is in 2wd and the front is unlocked. That’s the first thing I did. And beyond changing the transfer case fluid I haven’t touched it and I’m not. But I can still poke around and see if I can pin point it. I’m fairly confident it’s the transfer case but we’ll see. Of course it’s raining off and on today so driving it is going to be fun with no doors and no top.

Dropped it off this morning. Front of wife’s truck has oil all over it from following me. Something is definitely jacked.

Getting hot and fluid loss is not good but im betting the noise is driveline vibes exacerbated by the new higher speeds of the driveshaft.

I doubt it’s driveline vibes. My wife could hear it grinding at 70mph in her truck with her radio on and the windows up.

Well damn. That sounds an awful lot like what I’m hearing. Ironically I was typing up a post about driveshafts because that’s next on my upgrade list and my rear shaft is at a pretty nasty angle. Still doesn’t explain the oil coming out of the breather tube though.

How many heat cycles did they do? We usually tell customers 3 heat cycles before any long trips, and then after 500 miles bring it back to get the oil flushed.

Didn’t say. They said no long road trips for about 300 miles and then change the fluid.

Just a quick update. Shop has the truck and they hear the sound. Popped the cover off and no metal or any destruction. Nothing was over filled. They can't quite pin point the noise but they are ordering another bearing kit and are going to tear it all the way back down and replace them all again.
