Ha Anyone Had A 292 Inline 6 In Full Ton Dually Pickup? Or Had A 292 In General

So let me get this straight. You want to get rid of your perfectly good V8 for a 6 cylinder and possibly turbo charger it to make up the difference?

I believe FORD did that a few years ago, they call it the Ecoboost...
Not gonna happen, I rather stick to my 454.

Besides, I hear others in general when they ask about what motor is in the vehicle, I tell them 454. They be amazed yet exaggerate on the mpg.

I say it's a better runner anyways and it can get from here to there.

Along with the fact that I can go over 23 miles and back on the same ten bucks of fuel on interstate i-10 and that's with the turbo400 3 speed 4:10 gears. Along with properly aired tires, better tires.

Soon I may have a 4 speed(not 700r4) installed or if not I heard of gear vendors that can help.

By the way the engine got longtube headers and double exaust.

Keep in mind I don't drive fast on the streets, safe driving. If it's 35 I stay 35, 40 I stay 35. Of course , there's crazy drivers here in New Orleans that loves going fast

I don't get it, about the Chevy 454 and Buick 401s Oldsmobile 455s are they that different? Did the manufactures built there own engines? Especially since they say to me Chevy 454s are not good out of the rest of the other engines from different manufactures.

I hear crazy stuff about Cadillac 500s and 472s getting better fuel mileage than 454s despite larger size :\
Back in the day all the divisions had their own engine programs. A 454 is just as good as any Buick engine. They are just different. That's all

Yes,all 4 of GM's divisions built their own engines up to a certain point..after about 1978 GM had some divisions go on strike and they started "sharing" engines among the 4 divisions..

After 1978 you could see Pontiacs and Buicks,Oldsmobiles with 305 Chevy engines,or they may have had a V6 Buick in them,or one of their own engines ...since all 4 divisions shared basically the same chassis platforms it was fairly simple to swap in one of the other engines..the frames had the motor mount holes already drilled, all you needed was the right motor mount brackets and mounts..

As an example,a Pontiac Firebird could have come with a Buick V6,Chevy V8,a Pontiac 400 or 455,or an Olds 403,depending on what you ordered,or what GM had available to stuff in them that day..

Oldsmobile had a 455 up until 1976 or so,which was completely different than a Buick 455,and Pontiac had their own 455 also,up to around the same year..no interchangeable parts among any of those 3 engines despite having the same cubic inch displacement....opinions vary as to which ones were the "best",in my opinion they all had their quirks and faults, just like any other engine of any brand..

I think the Chevy 454 is better myself due to the fact more hop up parts are available cheaper, and they are as durable as any of the other 3..now Olds,Buick and Pontiac engines are getting scarce and expensive..454's aren't exactly plentiful any more either, especially older carbed ones..

I cant recall ever selling many engine parts like rings, bearings, etc, for Olds and Buick engines,I guess either no one rebuilt one when they wore out or they just junked the cars,or bought a good running used engine instead..or they never needed rebuilding !.
.Pontiacs always had top end issues ,timing chains & gears and lifters were a common item to be replaced on them..but their engines were decent otherwise..they had a sturdy bottom end..many race engines are (or were) based on Pontiac blocks..

Caddy 472 & 500 V8's did get somewhat better mpg than other big blocks but mostly due to their great low end torque ,and the fact they usually put a 3:08 or even higher geared diff behind it and most Caddy drivers were old farts who chugged along at low speeds and never opened the secondaries on the Q-jet...

A friend used to own a '68 Olds Delmont 88 that had a 455 with a factory 2 bbl carb,3:08's and it had 10.75 to 1 compression--that car could smoulder the tires endlessly, yet if you drove it gently, you could squeak 15 mpg out of it..its the lower compression after 1971 that killed off the engines efficiency and power more than anything else.

I know of a few old Vettes with the 375 HP version 327,that could cruise at 70 mph all day and deliver over 15 mpg, because they had 11:1 compression back then..most engines today have 9:1 or less..
And we don't have high octane leaded gas to run them on any more either,so its not a good idea to build a high compression engine now, unless you like buying race fuel for $25 for 5 gallons..

Just a couple things.
  1. Constantly driving under the speed limit does not mean you're a safe drive just an obstacle for those that can follow the rules.
  2. You are opposed to common sense and proven tech
  3. You want something different
Here's the solution:
An Amish Buggy
You still have options to suit your personal needs.

There's the Sedan
imageszxv.jpeg
There's the cargo special (perfect for a part time hot shot gig in warmer climates)
indexzxc.jpeg
And if the horsepower bug bights you.
Easy, just add horses!!!
No guessing dyno numbers, you always know the horsepower (assuming basic counting skills)
zxcnmz.jpeg
With the buggy.
  • You'll never hit the speed limit
  • Never have pesky EFI wiring to worry about
  • Will always have something different (can't be many Amish buggies in the Big Easy)
Before we get a tread on the best horse...only way to go: retired Budweiser Clydesdale

Basically GM make all the engines for today's manufactures under GM: Chevrolet, Cadillac, and Buick to cut costs

With all due respect if there's any disrespect , I'm not some other ones who constantly be in rush through city traffic and in the highway.

I have drivers out there who likes to blow their horns behind me trying to make me rush. Resulting in an accident . Which all they can do is just go around , especially when I'm in the slow lane while someone is behind me doing 80 to 90 in a 60 speed limit

There's plenty of times when I been almost in an accident thanks to dumb crazy drivers especially here in New Orleans.

If I want to get somewhere on time, i leave out early and just enjoy the ride. No rush.

Did I mention that I got a class B license with passengers and school bus endorsement?

Well that's not surprising you drive a suburban:haha:
I forgot to mention I got backseat drivers tell me how to drive and I'm like "uh, I drive a suburban and I got a class b license , what do you got?"

While on the other hand, I have a father who's with the Louisiana State Police, whenever I take him somewhere in my vehicle I have not yet had him critisize my driving....one night(in the suburban)when I was merging on a 40mph street , someone had flew right by me going more than 60 or 70. My father in the passenger seat said "this asshole, he's lucky Im not in my unit" and I said "if I had strobe lights I would've took him down for you" lol

So there's a history of accidents around you? Remember, I said driving below speed limits, Not driving like a maniac. Both situations are dangerous, especially when mixed.

Congrats...Just remember, those kids have to get to school on time...If they are habitually tardy it's treated like too many absences and effects grades/sports. Just saying.

That's the NoLoPoPo I know & love!!!
