So what version of GM limited slip is this one?

Brakes lock up on the passengers side rear when they are applied, so I pulled the drum off. Leaking seal, and brake pads down to nothing. Pinion seal leaks like a snotty nosed kid.

Pulled the cover off the rear end and found out it`s got a limited slip...that slips so good that I never knew it had one??

The best part is that it`s got 3.08 gears in it.

I blamed the engine for being gutless since I got this truck. Now I know why!

Time to find 4.11 3/4 tons.

Actually if the friction pads are so worn that it never locks up.... It prolly wont blow :dunno:

I don't think it will blow up either... I was going to buy brakes and seals for it until I seen the gears are 3.08s.

The front is anouther story... Neads brakes ball joints and seals plus the tiered has about a inch of play in it. :haha:

And don't try to give me Sh!t!!! this truck doesn't drive on the road!

Yah, easier to just find a decent set with some good gears dean :thumb:

AND YOU BETTER NOT BE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD!! grumble grumble :D

A gov loc doesn't have slipping clutches like a limited slip does Adam. A gov loc actually locks up solid when one wheels spins a certain RPM above the other, it just takes a moment to do so if it works. I haven't seen a 12 bolt one but for some reason that one looks odd. That pin sticking out toward the bottom right looks crooked and out of place?

Huh, I could have sworn somebody said they had friction pads somewhere :dunno:

nope thats why they break so much once you figure out how they work they are a brilliant design if every thing could be built much larger within the same size differential.

Hey Dean I think I have some 3.73s want em?

No Eric... Thanks but if I am going the swap rear end I want 3/4 tons with 4.11s
I got lots of 16 inch tires to use.

BS Dean, I've been with you hauling ass from the field, jumping the truck (Dukes of Hazard style....hey if your making up stories, might as well make it big right) and then beating the snot out of Russell's Hoe!

Wow, I would think you guys would know this as many times as I've posted this video....they do have friction discs....but still tend to blow up!

One reason they stop working (a good thing in a 1/2t rear) is the discs wear out, and can't apply the load to the other axle (this happened in my burb, so at least it never blew up)

That's the beauty of the gov-lock. It doesn't bang on corners like a locker or drag a tire like a LSD on slippery roads. It is a fully open differential and also a locker. The friction discs are not meant to carry a load like an LSD. They are way too small for that. They are just there as a means to lock and unlock.

The locking is most noticeable on ice because suddenly the rear end wants to go sideways instead the one-wheelie-peelie. Mine is tight enough that on jackstands I can grab one tire and throw it a 1/4 revolution then the other tire starts spinning along. I have seen some that seem to need 1,000,000 RPM to engage, though.

Dean, you and I have totally different ideas of slow and gutless lol! That little Chevy moves pretty dang good! I had my lb7 screaming for mercy and it couldn't keep up lol

Thats a good video Dave, I thought the mechanism was 100% mechanical with splines/teeth, I didn't know clutches were involved at the end of the lockup process when the cams force the clutches to engage. You get a gold star today Adam.

I've always thought the gov-loc was a good design, it works really well, it's just too weak to use offroad repeatedly. But it has worked very well in my brothers old truck and my Dads 2WD they each had for years as DD, 1/2 tons too.

The only reason I beat you back to the farm is cause when I drive the black truck it treat it like a Ratbag! :haha::haha:

I`ll see if I can get it to run better for a September rematch.

i have always said i like my 14ff ov-loc units best .

and if you know its in a axle AND how to work it thay work just fine.

whats a good posi unit to install if you happen to have a 12 bolt and wana upgrade but no full locker or spool ?

was thinking that for my 2wd build . but buddy has the axle and also a orignal posi carrier in good shape for it for 100 bucks . :dunno:

its got 4.11 open now .

I agree with Heath I think its a great design just a bit to small to be used really hard. If I was going to run a 14 b in the crew cab I would use a gov lok

I had one in my 96 Dually....it would suck balls in the snow...no weight back there, then when it did lock in...sideways you go.
