He toasted the trans and decided to go with a newer GMC 2500hd. Says he doesn't worry as much about it now.

Of course there is a huge difference between the '90 crewcab with a big block and a newer GM with a 6.0. All the comforts, better mileage, better acceleration, aerodynamics of something other than a brick. It just doesn't look as good.:whistle: Maybe it's the whole retro thing.:dunno:

Look at the above pic with the tundra next to the K5. That should give you an idea. The old tundra was a tonka toy to the new one. Heres my old one, its a 2008

I'm refering to the size between the old Tundra ext cab and the new tundra ext cab. My dad's is a 2000 and it just doesn't feel right compared to my '02 2500hd.

From what I remember about towing with my '91 crewcab I much prefer the '02 which I also like better than the '97 powerstroke I had. Oddly the '99 Dodge 2500 I had was a better puller than the '02 Chevy though. That could be from the fact it had lower gears and had a solid front axle though.:whistle:
 
Yeah I'm not sure on the ext cab models. There are like three variations. I know the Crewmax compared to a non Mega Cab Dodge the Toyota has waaayy more leg room!

I'll try and snap a couple pics of the cab this weekend.

Go test drive one for a sunday drive. Just because your bored. Dont take your check book though.:)
 
You desert guys have got it made. The only bad thing that I can see is the lack of trees to catch your rig if you make a mistake before you slide off into a ravine or something. That and the lack of shade.

Just wanted to say I really enjoyed this thread. I'm jealous of your abilities fabbing up some of your mods. Keep up the great posts!
 
Bent up my B-pillar and the halo for my rear cage. Now just gotta cut and notch all the straight pieces! Rear buckets and seat belts ordered so I can wheel with my boys a couple times before I deploy! :waytogo:
 
I've been second guessing myself on it all day. Thinking about making the smaller rear halo (smaller tube) a bit wider. Right now its 36" long and 43" wide outside to outside and will meet the B-pillar right inboard of the bends.

It looks sort of wierd I think, but the most I can move it out is a couple inches on each side.

The B-pillar will get an X and the halo will have a down bar off each bend in the rear that meet at a single point. Also a down bar of the forward bend of the halo running forward to the botoom of the Billar.

It may just look narrow and funny to me because none of the other tubes are there.

This is going to be a rear portion only and a temporary cage that will get sold as a removeable piece after I get back from deployment. I have other plans :hack::grind::weld:but want to get my boys out on a few trips before I go.

What do you guys think?

I think copying Rene's design is a good start. It looks good to me so far. :waytogo:
-What size tubing is that?
- Do you already have a plan for under the body to the frame supports?
- Are you going through the dash, in front of it, or something else?
I'm on the edge of my seat here....:D
 
The cage is temporary and will be sold when I do my next phase. It will only going to cover the rear passenger area from the B pillar back.

I am going to sandwich the body with plates and go to the frame at the B pillar and the rear down bars.

1.75 .120 wall HREW.

I just need something back there so I can wheel with my kids a couple times before I deploy. Not gonna get extravagant, but it will still be a solid design. My next phase will be similar to Blazinzuk's rig, but with a windshield frame. The cage will tie into the Boatside tube so none of this will be useable. I figure if I build it to fit under a hardtop it shouldn't be to hard to sell later on.
 
Great plan Brian....tying it all together is cool, and stout.
 
I like it. I plan on something very similar in my Jimmy this summer. Bolt in and out for it.

And it will do what you need it to do, protect the young uns
 
So you guys don't think that Halo is to narrow. I'm definitely going to get some of the straight tubes cut and mocked up to see how it looks before I redo it. I think with the downbars it will add some "width" to the look of the cage.

I think part of the reason it looks so narrow to me is the illusion of it sitting with the B-pillar bar which is big cause I kept it as close to the body as possible.
 
whats the measurement on the Halo. Its their to protect the kids, but I don't think its so narrow that it won't do its job. Especially with the down bars in the rear and the B pillar
