Hardtop side windows - which to keep?

I like the sliders (and so do my kiddos), but I keep a spare set of solids around in the event I ever feel like going that route. I guess it's nice to have options.

I've got solids on mine and wouldn't have it any other way for no other reason than looks. I just plain don't like the look with the sliders. My solids are blacked out with 5% tint and I think they just look great that way.

The sliding ones are a lot heavier, cant really imagine why there'd be such a difference but compare with my buddies full glass from a '78 and my '77 sliders mine is significantly heavier...but then again who needs a top anyways

To address this:
Solid are one single glass
Sliders are two pieces of glass so about the same weight.
Next you have the 1/4 window sealing felt
the wind wings and latches
Aluminum frame and center brace

I've had both, our climate is similar, not worth it IMO.

They leak, parts are harder to get (and there are way more) the wing windows loosen up, the screws holding them together are steel and the frame is aluminum (so they won't come out if you need to try and fix the wing windows) and so on.

I will address this:
Leaks can be fixed with new felt, Latches can be replaced and wind wings are either out or in so I see no problem there. As I posted several times PARTS ARE AVAILABLE! http://www.cheyennepickup.com/

Thanks for your opinions.
For me it is not a matter of breaking in, because no one here will break in a 30 year old car especially when there is nothing inside making it worth braking in. Also I plan to tint the side and rear glass 80%, so no one might have a view inside anyway. I was just curiouse If someone got them ever leakproove. I would have to spend some time to clean everything and change the sliding window seal since there is plenty of moss growing on the weather strip and seal.

However, I think I will take the sliders off the hard top and keep them for the time being. Maybe one day I might change it from solide glass to sliders...

One last question. Does the sliders really improve ventilation much when you keep them open a bit?

YES it really helps I open them about two inches and lower my windows a couple inches. No hard wind on me and great flow! If you have kids it gives them a break from wind also And you did see mine do not leak? Also the link I listed for parts did you check it out?

No leaks on mine either, and in south Texas heat they work well enough that I often turn off the AC and just run with everything open.

Yes, I have two small kids, he will be 1 soon and she will be 3 in may and she is cracy for the "Chebby" she calls the Blazer. But I doubt we will often go with our Kids. Safety is I feel missing in the Blazer.

Checked your list. All parts also avaiable at LMC-Truck. So parts supply isn't the matter.

Swapped sliders in mine last July and considering the fact that my truck is A/C delete it helped cool the interior down tramendously. Kids love them too. Liked it so much I took both sets of spare solids to the junk yard and tossed them. Will never go solid again.

Oh yeah, I forgot the cheesy plastic latches on these things that appear to last at best 5 years.

Guys in Austria, I suspect getting parts over there from Cheyenne or whatever is not quite as inexpensive as it is for us.

As to the vent windows, when they finally loosen up enough, they simply bounce against the window glass continously as you travel down the road if the side windows are shut.

Just offering up my experiences. Spent a bunch of time looking for sliders, finally found a pair (then two more sets) bought them, installed them, and am now back to solid side windows. I'm selling all my sets of sliders, I just don't see enough positive to outweigh the negative. I don't have AC and don't mind 100+ degree weather in it. :)

Doesn't hurt to keep the sliders around for a bit, swapping them isn't too hard. You can always try them and see how it is.

sounds to be a good advise. I will remove the sliders plus weather strip and all other hardware and scrap the hardtop since it has some holes and edges damage. Or is it worth keeping such a bulky hardtop? Do they thend to break easy?

They don't tend to "break", other than the bonds at the seams fail and it starts to split. :(

Yes they are bulky, and unless you have space hard to store, but if you go offroad with the truck, yours may eventually split. Chips and what not are fairly easy to repair since the top is fiberglass, but the seams are pretty much impossible to fix cleanly.

Well alot of people think alot of things. I would just say either through them in or put the spare top on, and try them out. If you like them then keep them, if not put the solids back in. It's a 50/50 thing. Good luck.

Note, 1973 and early 1974 trucks don't have the lock strip in the side windows!

Have fun getting those out, and even more putting them back in.

Go Sliding

Sliding windows are best, they're a lot easier to shoot out of.
