my top was perty stuck on when i took it off for the first time. I just folded down the back seat, stood up and did a good ol' power squat and it popped off, but i'm far from being as tall most of you are i bet. A mere 5'7.

Mine has been on, off, on, off, on, off, on, off, etc... It is gone for good now because last time I took it off it started to leak a little bit...

...ya... looks like that would causs a leak or two.

i dont think i'll ever take mine off, until it leaks anyway. my neighborhood isnt the greatest and there's too many things of value inside. i like being able to roll all the windows up and turn on the AC. and with them all down, there is quite a bit of airflow, dont think i'd want anymore. when the seal gets real bad i'll probly keep it off for a couple days just for the hell of it, then throw a new seal on and leave it.

tops are over rated:grin:

That is what I told my girlfriend

One thing I learned with my Heeps and the K5 is that if you want to take the top on and off a thin coat of lithium grease between the seal and the metal matting surface helps keep it sealed. It doesn't allow the rubber to bunch up if you have it misaligned when you bolt it down and it won't stick when you remove it tearing seals. I also promote the squat method as somehow I was always stuck removing the top myself. I just squat the top up enough to place a 2x4 spacer between the body and the top. Then slide a 2x4 from one side to the other under the top with eyebolts on the outside and ratchet strap it upwards towards the ceiling and drive out. It keeps the top from getting messed up and I could still back under it to park in the garage and reinstall it later by myself. Oh and for the Heep rides out there hiding, I know they are out there, be careful of the back glass I strapped mine down because it decided to pop open once and hit the refrigerator in the garage... pooof it was gone:confused:

Ive had 3 K5's, only one that leaked was the 78, and thats b/c I did not replace the seal when I put it back on...I have heard if you dont store them correctly they will warp and leak, but never seen it myself. Take your top off...as for the half-roof guys, I prefer it, but then again I sunburn really bad. Thats actually part of the reason I began liking k5s. To each their own...

This may sound stupid, but I bought my first K5 a few months and can not get the shell off. I took out all the bolts around the side and around the cab. There were no visible bolts left to remove. It still wouldn't come off. Are there some hidden bolts that I don't know about? The shell around the cab would come up, but above the tailgate wouldn't budge. I may be an idiot, but I swear I couldn't figure it out.

i took mine off this weekend for good. and after i took all the bolts off it wouldnt budge either, turned out it was frozen to the rails:laugh: , damn new york weather

Where is the it leaked before and leaks just as bad vote?? My top and doors comes off in May and stays off until Oct.

That's what I was looking for. I was the first person to ever take the top off, and it leaked before and it still leaks. Of course the seals are probably 34 years old too.

Took mine off and back on alot, even drove around with it just sitting on the dowls without bolts and no leaks. Now its off for good I think.

Took mine of and had the whole truck Line-X'd and then put the top back on.The coating on the top rail makes a nice non-slip seal plus once the interior is coated who cares if it leaks.

mine has also been on and off several times prolly more than 50....lol and it still doesnt leak, even though i had to change a few of the bolt clips due to being lazy with the 3/8 impact to install the bolts and not pre thread them first causing them to strip.... hehehe i knew better but oh well!

I had a 76 4x4 when I was in college, took that thing on and off throughout the summer months with no problems. It was so nice with it off. I just boght a 79 and have not had this top off. (It's currently missing half the bolts so its been off ) It hasn't rained here in 102 days and I don't know if it leaks.

I always tightened the upper cab bolts, pulling the cap snug to the cab before I tightened the rails. Don't know if that was good or bad, but it worked for me.

This tanks seals are all dried out. I suspect it will leak. I ordered all new window seals from Chevy Duty. Waiting for arrival.

I've only had this '85 for a little over a month, and haven't had the top off yet. It doesn't leak at all, stays dry as a bone inside, and it may have never been de-shelled in the 21 years that it's been on the road. When they replace the rear quarters, the tailgate, and some of the floor pan (next month I think), they'll have to pull the top.

I'll just have a new set of GM seals put in after they get done with the paint work and are ready to put the shell back on (it'll be the start of midwestern T-storm season, after all).

out of all the years iv had mine iv taken the to off about 15-20 times , i always rubb the seals down with armorall before putting it back on and so far no leaks.
