Heaph's Build Thread - Built not Bought

I can see people in line at the platform already, waitin for chief to take em for a spin around the block.

Duder...This is the sicket thing I have seen in recent times. You are doing a great job, (and good on the discipline, it can be hard to redo something once it i done) keep it up...It's your year man.

Expirimenting with 3/4Blazer's drawing a few posts back I came up with this today. The rear springs seemed like they had a lot more flex in them so why not?

I will weld a 3/4" X 10" Bolt to the top shackle which will pivot inside bushings in the tubes. The x-member will go between the framerails. The piece of tube closest to the shackle will be welded to the top of the frame rail. To get the angle correct I am going to move the forward rear hanger rearward and up the framerail about 6". All together this should widen my wheelbase and drop the bastard a few inches.

Glad to see that you are trying my idea out. I cant wait to see the final outcome!

Yeah, that is a great idea. It should pretty much eliminate any shackle binding and give a bit more flex/movement for articulation. Great idea, 3/4 Ton!

Can't wait to see CH's beast movin' under its own power!

CH,

See what you can do to support that outside shacklebolt while you're experimenting on that rear shackle setup.

What you have pictured is only a single-shear connection and may not survive long with the forces it's likely to see. If you can get the crossmember/mount to hold the shackle from both sides, it will be a double-shear connection and will have substantially better strength and durability.

Build it right, and only build it once! :waytogo:

Taking your advice I slapped this together this evening. I think I can get rid of the cross member totally, so I used it as a mock framerail. Once a bolt is welded through the shackle it would make sense to have the 2X2 bolted to frame. That way I wont have to cut to take it apart.

Now i finally see what all this crazy talk means...

:waytogo: nice idea

Amazing!

My hat's off to you for turning your dream into reality. From concept, to drawings, to fabrication and the resolve to see it through... it's bigger and badder than anything around.

Cool that you received great support on line, and at your home, from CK5'ers.

I grew up in Worcester, MA. "Wicked" cool rig.:D

Just finished reading this whole thread.

I love the way solutions get engineered by all the persons who are following along and chipping in ideas that flow together into some brilliant new way of "doing it." Awesome.

This is pumping me up for a build, thoughts are percolating . . . .

There's a lot of "smart" on CK5..... the people who are willing to ask for opinions and help will almost always end up with a much better build as a result.

Having this place as a sounding board is great. You can post up an idea and everyone will let you know if it's a good one, bad one....or how to make it even better.

And yes.....seeing a cool build happening before your very eyes each time you log in to CK5 is pretty addictive too. :waytogo:

Nice looking MONSTER. I hope you have deep enough mud there to get it stuck. I can't wait to see videos or pics of it throwing mud.

as soon as the weather breaks around here im gonna get my ass back in gear. Hopefully early March, come by any time.

I dont see the relation as to what is being built compared to my design idea, but I cant wait to see the outcome and hope the final product works out for you!

So whats new with the beast? c'mon its got to warm enough now. It's been in the 50s here all weeks
