Heart transplant time

Max, does your blazer have a dent on the passenger side rocker? I picked up a door at Nate's a long time ago and wondered who's it was. He mentioned a few ck5 members were there, but unfortunately I had to leave before I could chat.

I think I want to road trip for a week when my dually is finally done and winter driving is over.

It has dents everywhere :doah: Fortunately I have acquired all the sheetmetal necessary to restore her to her former sheetmetal-gang glory :D

Luke, when you make that road trip you definitely need to stop by. We'll throw some meat on the grill and have plenty of frosty brews on hand :thumb:

Since the thread is worthless without more pics, here are some I just took. The first are of the new-to-me powerplant resting comfortable in it's new home:

The pan has orange silicone around the gasket area, so it has been into at one point. Probably to fix leaks, since it doesn't leak ANY oil. Also, all the glow plugs are good and look like they have been replaced recently. They are AC's, but I couldn't decipher the type from the one I pulled. You can see the balancer is nice and new, since I replaced it. The old one still looked serviceable, but I figured why risk it. The alternator is off of my TBI motor. I simply swapped the serp pulley to the v-bely pulley from the old alternator that was on the engine. The upper bracket mount isn't in the proper spot, but a very simple adapter bracket will fix that - I wanted to keep the CS series alternator, and in particular this one is a lifetime warrantied jobbie :D The AN fitting by the firewall connected to the heater water feed on the TBI engine, which came out of the rear passenger coolant passage. On the diesel it comes out of the water crossover, and the existing hose will reach and fit fine. Fuel lines will be a simple hookup, as will oil, tranny, etc. I will write about those after I do it :wink1:

Here's a pic of the interior of my truck:

I hope my roommate remembers where all that crap goes :eek1: :doah: :haha:. On the plus side, he swapped out my "Unleaded Gasoline" fuel gauge for the "Diesel" gauge out of the donor truck. Likewise, I have the diesel 80psi oil pressure gauge, and the "Service Engine Soon" (MIL) lamp insert has been replaced with the "Low Coolant" insert. I will probably put the "Wait" lamp in too, even though I plan on using a manual glow set up for now.

Here's the remains of my under hood wiring that Jason handed to me saying "Here ya go!":

Gee, thanks a lot :haha:

I just finished measuring for hoses and lines and figuring what fittings I need so I can make a trip to The Parker Store on Friday to pick it all up. I have to plumb fuel, oil cooler, tranny cooler, and power steering/hydroboost. Nothing too complicated, but I want to have my ducks in a row because the Parker Store isn't open on Saturday. They can crimp up the PS hoses and they carry all the Aeroquip (which is a Parker brand) AN fittings and hose and such, at pretty decent prices too.

Anyway, thats where I am and where I am going. I hope to fire it this weekend. It may not be driveable because of other miscellaneous stuff I want to do, but I definitely want it clattering and moveable under it's own power before Monday.

Done :p:

Btw, Brian here is our soon-to-be third roommate... and he can't wait (long dreadful story behind that :haha:).

It's either moving in with you guys or going back out in the desert again. Either way makes no difference but if I chose the desert route, I'd feel a lot more comfy in a camper than in the back of a Blazer. Really can't wait to get the fock out of here, long story and I'd rather not go into details about it. :wink1:

Good to finally see the 6.2 in, I can't believe you actually had to unbolt the vacuum booster/master cylinder to get the motor in. I'm watching this swap, oh wait.... never mind, why watch it here when I can watch at the house. :doah:

I wouldn't call it a dent ----- more like a crater!!!!!! :doah: :D

Today kinda sucked. I spent most of the day chasing parts rather than actually working on the truck :( I also spent an atrocious amount of money on said parts :doah:

Anyway, here's the progress report for today. I got the hard fuel lines connected to the fuel pump and return tube on the motor, I cut the tranny hard lines and put AN's on the ends, I replumbed my oil cooler lines (the set from my gas 350 were too short), and I installed the hydroboost.

Here's the fuel lines connected to the hard lines:

DSCF2441-r.JPG

DSCF2442-r.JPG

They go to the top of the frame rail and run along it to the fuel pump and return nipple. They are just zip-tied in place at the moment. I need to get some clamps to permanently hold them in place, plus some heat shield stuff to protect them from the exhaust heat.

HEre's a pic looking at the fuel pump - you can see the supply and return lines going to their respective locations. You also see the AN fittings I put on the tranny hard lines:

Here's the oil cooler plumbed up:

The push-on hose doesn't look as trick as steel braided, but it sure costs a heck of a lot less. The fittings aren't much cheaper though :(

Here's the hydroboost installed, along with the rebuilt line sets:

DSCF2448-r.JPG

Unfortunately, while I was hoping my master cylinder would bolt up that just wasn't the case :doah:

DSCF2449-r.JPG

DSCF2451-r.JPG

The bolt spacing is the same, but the hydroboost is a smaller diameter than the master cylinder. Soooo, looks like I have to get a new MS

Tomorrow I hope to mount up the Racor filter on the firewall and plumb it in, install and plumb up the tranny cooler, drop the fuel tank and mod the pickup assembly, and maybe get some wiring done. We'll see how it goes...

It's all the little things that make the swap a bit of a pain IMO.

Oh yeah dude...the hydroboost MC is a little different, just so you know. :D

Rene

I have nothing useful to say about your swap other than keep at it.

Oh, that and I hate you guys with your rust free trucks. Imagine all that grime and grease surrounded by rusty metal and you have what most of us here work on.

Thanks for the heads up  :D

Well, $22 later and I now have the correct one... ugly cast iron bitch that it is :p:

I got the fuel tank dropped today. Drained the guzzoline out and modded the in-tank assembly. The TBI pump went bye-bye, and in its place I put a piece of 3/8" stainless tubing with a ghetto anti-vortex pickup on the end. I had to mod the filler neck also to allow the deezel pump nozzle to fit. Now all I have to do is put it back in

The front and rear lines are bass-akwards to the other MC's if my memory serves me tonight. I got stuck with the ugly cast iron pig too. I wonder if they even make a nice aluminum MC for the hydroboost?

It's kinda fun seeing someone else stub their toes on all the same things I did when I swapped to the 6.2. Well, at least some of the more obscure probs anyways.

BTW, gonna run the TBI 350 in the Crew Cab project. I feel the need to expedite the build somewhat and it makes things a ton easier/faster etc for right now. It's not a DD anyways, so fuel cost isn't even a factor. I can re-evaluate power plant later...

Either build a 6.2 TD, or possibly Dmax swap, or most likely a 500+ cid BBC with MPFI.

Did you get the alt mounted? I had to split the housing and rotate 180 degrees to get mine to physically fit...of course this pulled something inside causing me to have to just buy the right alt later. :doah:

They do - they used 'em on the NBS trucks, but the line fittings are metric. Also, the price was $134, vs. $22 for the remanned cast iron jobbie I got. They are ugly, but they are also usually long lived and trouble free, so I suppose it's a wash :). Anyways, it's already installed and bled, so my binders should work fine... theoretically :D

Well, I kinda figured the aluminum MC wouldn't work somehow. Otherwise, GM would have used it, right? I just didn't know why it wouldn't work. Now I do. Everything else has pretty much moved along as planned. I am using the in-line TBI fuel filter mounted in the frame rail for my pre-filter (it is nominally rated at 10 microns), which I changed to a new one since it was full of gasoling and over 2 years old. Eventually I will replace it with a basic 10 micron spin-on Racor with no sediment bowl. I will still have the 2 micron Racor with sediment/water bowl mounted on the firewall immediately ahead of the IP, so for now it should work fine.

A gasser? Bite your tongue!!! How will a TBI make it any easier? You already have all the diesel stuff, so it isn't like it's a major swap for you.

Well, it's sorta mounted. It actually fits OK, it just needs a simple extender bracket which won't take much to make. The AC compressor will probably be much more complicated. Not only do I want to mount up my Seltec for AC duties, but I want to mount up an A6 for on board air use. The Seltec v-belt pulleys have 2 sheaves, so I can use one to run a slave belt to the A6. At least, that's the plan...

Unfornutely we had some rain today, so I didn't get all that much done. Fuel tank is back in, along with the filler neck which I hogged out with a hole saw to fit the diesel filler nozzles. Finished getting the hydroboost and PS hooked up. Installed and bled the new master cylinder. Changed the frame-mounted fuel filter and made sure all gasoline was out of the lines.

Still to do:

- Mount Racor on firewall and plumb the two short lines
- Install intake manifold
- Make stub bracket for alternator
- install belts and fan
- install and plumb trans cooler
- install radiator
- install starter and mod the converter shield
- build exhaust :doah:
- mount AC compressor (not needed to make it driveable)
- wiring :doah: :doah: :doah:

It never ends... :doah: :D

Easier because my Crew Cab is an '87 and came stock with the TBI 350. It ran good too. Besides, it'll give me time to rebuild the 6.2 I have in the Garage...hopefully along the same lines as your build. Going with the TBI 350 gets it running and wheeling sooner.

So, Greg is sleeping, and I needed to put back together the inside of his truck. I have been preoccupied with a awesome girl lately, so I had a chance tonight and I took it.

I was just gonna zip tie the harness back together, but greg seemed to frown upon that. So, he got blue tape instead.

ohh, diesel...

Cluster in...

Almost all back together, he just needs to get a weather pack for 4 wires going through the friewall on the pass side, then I can put the glovebox back in.

Only in the 80's... my '79 K10 used the cast iron master and bolted right up to the hydroboost.

So, Greg is sleeping,..

I left work early because I was not feeling too good :(. I crashed for a while at a friends shop which is only a few hundred yards from work because I didn't feel like driving home. After a few hours I felt good enough to make the trip home, and when I got here I headed straight for my bed.

Some kind of cramping stomach sitting on the toilet thing :( That's the last time I get food off of the roach coach :doah:

Thanks for getting the dash back together! Looks good :D

Oh, and the awesome girl preocupation deserves a thread of it's own :p: :D
