heated mirrors/6500 optimizer

No you pop up the chrome cover on the bottom of the mirror the bolts are there. You will be left with 3 holes in your door, they have threaded inserts in them so its not a nut and bolt, just a bolt

Exactly. But keep in mind how rusted and damaged it may be. That's why my passenger mirror turned into a replacement mirror. I figure I'd just tighten everything up and put the cover back on... nope. I could have gotten away with installing new threaded inserts, but I had no rivet gun, or those threaded inserts.. mirror came with plastic anchors. The clamp for the mirror wouldn't tighten either, threads were jacked up.

I don't have the stock mirrors. The OP removed them and I think covered the holes since I don't see them. He installed a 3 point towing mirror on the driver's side and some crap weirdo mirror on the passenger side. It looks like ass honestly. I also want them to be collapsible(?) so if I need the side clearance I can just pull them in.

I wonder if these could be retrofitted somehow:

I was looking at these. Looks like they mount the same way as the one's you posted.

what about the triangle mirrors how do you replace those. cause on my 87 jimmy the driver side latch piece is loose and wont close the window all the way, and when i drive you can hear the wind.

The vent windows? If the glass is good, they make kits you can order, comes with everything to replace the stud and handle that goes through the glass. If it whistles because the weatherstrip around the window is chewed up or otherwise junk. You have to replace those. Haven't done that yet, but in another month or two I will be.

where would i get the kit from lmc? and the weatherstiping is in good condition its the handle piece that is loose and wont close the window tight enough.

If it's just loose, it's probably missing the rubber spacer/seal thing, and spring washer that goes on the stud, on the inside that goes between the window and handle.

Should be able to order them from most parts stores, or at least thier website.

http://www.jcwhitney.com/vent-window-handle-kit/p2003285.jcwx?filterid=d241y1986j1 is what the kits are, the problem ordering a kit is that either you replace the stud and everything, which looks like a PITA, because everyone I've seen is glued to the window. I bet the new kits have rubber seals so you don't need to glue it back on. Or just use the parts you need, but then you just wasted money.

You can goto a junk yard/pull-a-part and get what you need. My driver side vent window had a broken handle, so I grabbed one off a G20 van for $1 at a local pull-a-part. You can get them from any GM Truck/Van/K5/Sub of our body style. Just make sure you bring your old handle, since there are a few slight changes in shape. But if you are just missing the rubber spacer and spring washer, you could probably goto a parts store and get some random pieces that will work.

Oh ya make sure you have a small punch, the handle is held on by a spring pin.

How did he mount those? They don't looks attached to the little triangle area. Almost looks like the pillar.

So power windows seem to be set a little too far back. I wonder if the little window location would be the best? Now just figuring out how to mount them would be the trick. His power mirror stick out a little too far to my liking, I'd get a shorter one.

You could create an account on that Diesel Power site and try asking the user how he did the install. You could email him or private message maybe rather than just posting a comment, looks like someone already tried that.

I have no idea how it is done. I'm sure you could fab up a mounting plate and attach it to the door or the vent window piece, of course the vent window would have to be modified somehow..

Done and done, that has got to be the weirdest forum layout in all the internet. Not user friendly at all.

The P400 is one great engine. The bottom end has a total cast iron main cap girdle thats all one piece.

The Pan on the P400 is a lot different with the sump located different too.

The P400 should fit OK in a K5
Without serious mods to the pan the P400 will not fit the GMt 400 trucks though.

The turbo issue is no biggy even with AC just use a Banks turbo manifold and turbo and your set.

The Optimizer 6500 is a good choice also just not quite as good an engine as it does not have the super strong bottom end.

The P400 has the forged crank too

Now the mirror issue my well be a workable thing too.

I believe that somebody makes a heated mirror retro fit kit that has the heater pads that just stick to the back of the mirrors.

This is not a really quicky solution but I think its workable.

If not, someone makes retrofit mirrors that have the feature built in.
