Help a noob out with his first k5 purchase

bike is sold...thanks tho. (but wouldnt take a loan out on an old truck/toy) - I figure if I cant come up with the 2-3k in cash to buy one, how am i gonna afford working on it and fixing it. just my opinion.

have 3k to spend. im just gonna keep posting up what i find that i may buy, so i can get input.

saw that one....thought the price was high for it to be needing work. any idea what im looking at to fix the issues?

i had kinda gotten the impression that i could buy one for 2k that was good to go...is that not true?

i like the 87....sounds ready to camp in right off the bat, and maybe even some hidden falls trips. price is a bit high.

sell your bike, then buy a blazer. That one looks too beat for that price
:waytogo:

Your bike is worth more then a stock truck!! Sell the bike and then look for a truck that has already been modded. You will spend tons of money modding it and the resale value of those mods stinks. Find one someone else has already dumped the money into.

Has anyone asked what your intensions are? If you want a lifted truck with 35" tires I'd say $2500-3000. But that comes with the stock axles. For light duty use its probably fine. I camp in fine but you will need to remove the rear seat and buy some foam cusion to fill the hole in the foot well.

If you intend to do some serious off roading or tow anything the 10 bolt axle will break. Your probably look more like $3k-5k for anything that's been lifted correctly and has some good axles under it.

He said he wants to spend 2k or less. That K5 should be a good place to start. 2k won't get you a lifted Samurai around here much less a K5.

I have been through 4 K5s, and three suburbans so far. If I could go back, I would find a 1991 K5, completely stock. Anything under 200k miles that has been well taken care of. Thats just me though.

I'd agree under $2k wont get much. I bought my 87 blazer lifted with 35" tires for $2k. But I also went through and rebuilt the motor, and tranny because I didn't want to get stranded out in the woods somewhere. My thought was I didn't trust any 20 year old truck and I would want to replace those things anyway no matter how nice of condition. I rebuilt the motor and trans for an additional $1100.

Since then I've replaced the rear axle with a 14 bolt because I broke the 10 bolt. Installed a locker and lifted it properly using ORD shackles.

I'd say you should be able to get a decent running lifted truck in this economy for $2k-3k fairly easily. People are dumping these V8's because they can't afford to drive them. I wouldn't expect you to be able to find one that's had the axle swapped for that price but just a lifted truk on 33's or 35's shouldn't be hard.

Also, being an '80, that one will have an NP205 transfer case. It is a slip yoke rear, but still an NP205.

X2 go for the last few years. The TBI is well worth it, especially if you plan on taking it on road trips!!! I love my '91
