HELP!!! Dangerous brake problem needs resolved TONITE. (MONDAY)

Thanks so much for walking me through this. is there a certain torque spec that I need to tighten the spindle nuts be or can I tighten them with a screw driver?

should the tabs on the washer between the spindle nuts be bent into the tabs on the nut bc they don't look like they all match up?

should I use rtv sealer to seal the head on the axle shaft to the hub like the po did. It seems like there is a metal gasket provided. is rtv necessary?

it seems like they were not torqued before so I should be ok till I can torque them to the proper specs, right?

"Screwdriver tight" is definitely NOT good enough for the wheel bearings.

If you don't have a service manual that outlines the procedure, I'll go get mine and scan it for you.

What year is your rig?

The torque spec is 50 Ft lbs for the outer and the inner Torque to 50 back off and torque to 35. The lock tabs will bend into the nothches on the nut. I only use RTV on my axle shafts and no leakage what so ever. I have seen all 3 ways on here it is really a personal preference. If you have the gaskets use em and through some RTV on them to hold them in place.

it's a 14b out of a 77 suburban, it would seem that is if I could get them off with a screw driver so that would suggest that someone put them on with only the torque of a screw driver, would that seem correct or would I be able to take off a torqued down nut off with just the force of a screw driver.

It would seem that the previous owner of that axle was mostly likely a jackass that shouldn't be allowed to own tools. :D

If you were able to take the nuts off with a screwdriver, either someone didn't torque them down to begin with or they are backing off themselves. In either case, you might want to make sure your bearings are in good condition.

another thing to remember to do is when you are torqueing down the spindle nuts, do it WHILE spinning the wheel

You forgot, "... and then back off 1/4 turn"

And my manual says the outer locknut is 65 ft-lbs.

I said back off but I forgot to add 1/4 turn. I set mine up identical to my Front 60 and have had no issues. I also run about 1.5 gallons of gear oil in mine so the wheel bearings are def getting lube.:D
