So i have been driving my truck for the past few months and it has 160-170,000 on it. Just the other day i got on the freeway and i noticed it didn't want to shift into the last gear. Before i could get home it went out all together while trying to go up a slight hill. Now it won't shift out of first. I have park and reverse as well. So i all i could do becuase it was dark was check my fluid.

After doing some research this is that approach am thinking am going to take but i can't address it till next week so i thought i would see if you guys have any advice or input.

1. I was a less than a quart low so i will start by adding fluid. (i dobt this is it)

2. drop the pan (and check the fluid/debris)

3. Check the Governor gear

4. Check the valve bodies

5. then TV cable

That is where im lost any input would be helpful along with details on things to look for. Im hopping to by time before i have to replace it.

If you've only got 1st, you're SOL, brother. Better start saving pennies- your tranny is gonna need a rebuild ASAP.

700r4s grenade from the top down. I'm betting you have larger-than-factory tires and have been driving around in OD all the time. Ask me how I know.......

Sounds like a broken sunshell to me, I had the same symptoms about 9 years ago and that's what it was. I had my buddy who owns a transmission shop build my trans and it's been good now for the last 9 years. I would highly recommend him to build your trans or you could just buy one from Bowtie Overdrives.

I have first, park, and reverse actually.

I understand your theory on larger tires but there are plenty of people running larger tires out there using 700s with OD. I do have a cooler on it and i am re geared to so it should be less stress on the tranny.

I have always wanted to build one myself so i might try it but i also thought about dropping in a new one too? Just wasn't planning it so soon

You have to remember that the people who have a 700R4 that is still alive have a "built" 700R4 not a stock trans. There are plenty of HD parts that can go into building a solid 700R4 but the price usually stops alot of people from wanting to use the 700R4 at that point. I have no regrets with my 700R4 since i'm well into 9 years since my buddy built it for me with all available updates (at the time) and with lots of HD components.

Ya i was hoping to patch mine for now but if need be i will replace it with a decked out 700r4 or maybe another tranny but i don't know anything about other option in trannies i just want something streetable with overdirve. So i guess it really boils down to weather i rebuild it or buy one rebuilt?

If you want I can ask my buddy how much it would cost to build yours with all the good stuff. Naturally it would be a close rough estimate until he had it apart but he does pretty good and nailing it close enough.

Ya it definitely doesn't hurt to ask i guess

Don't be silly. I was talking "go forward" gears. Park is pretty much neutral with a pawl, and reverse is always retardedly strong.........

Also, what I meant is that too many people actually use OD while cruising around town. Unfortunately, if you do this, it's only a matter of time until your 700r4 craps out. Keep it in D until you break 55, and it'll last you a lot longer.

Once again, ask me how I know..........

This isn't really true, it all depends on tire size and gearing. I ALWAYS run in OD and i've not had a single issue ever. I'm running 4.56's and 35's but I suppose if someone is running 40's or something with only 5.13's then it might be an issue.

Or if you're running 35s and 3.42s......

Let's face it, Scott. A built 700r4 can easily last forever, driven by someone who understands how it works. That being said, a factory unit can be destroyed in a matter of months by someone who doesn't drive it as required.

This is true. The easiest way to grenade a 700R4 though is to not set the TV cable properly and you can destroy the trans in a matter of minutes.

And here I was thinking I was gonna have a good sleep tonight. Until you brought the poorly adjusted TV cable thing up.....

Night sweats, here I come!!!! :rotfl: :rotfl:

Lets not use the wrong terminology afterall that's what gets lots of people in trouble with a 700R4. You don't ADJUST a TV cable, you SET a TV cable. :deal:

Set, shmet...........

No matter how you word it, I'm gonna have nightmares tonight!!!!! :doah:

:rotfl: :rotfl:

No worries, i'm sure you've SET your TV cable? :D

BTW, got my calendar today. Thanks again to you and Kim for all your hard work. The calendar looks awesome brother. Tell Kim she did another good job. :thumb:

Glad to hear it, brother!!! I'll pass it along..........:thumb:

Now, get this CK5er back into a tranny pronto!!! :deal: :rotfl:

As long as price doesn't scare Brian away he won't be the first person who i've helped to get a quality trans built for. :D

700's aren't a cheap trans to build if you want it to survive.

These really are not that hard to rebuild. Ive done about 5 or 6 of them in my shop at home. Used parts from a combination of Bowtie and monster. They all work great. Bowtie is a great resource for parts and tech info.
