The point is always reliability, and never having to make a post like this one again. I've run an SM465 in my Jimmy for over 9 years, and I have driven my truck back and forth the TX (5000 miles return) Towed a 5500 lb trailer down to San Diego and back (on 35's no less... 3200 miles return) Driven to San Diego and back without a trailer, Moab and back on 40's (2400 miles return).
Total road trip carnage for me was an alternator in TX, then the alternator pivot bolt in Wyoming...and one rear U-joint coming home from CA. The U-joint got me home though.
A manual tranny is just fine for a daily driver. I'm finally replacing my SM 465 with an NV4500 though. Overdrive is a good thing to have. The SM 465 is getting a new home though because even with over 300,000 miles on it it still shifts properly, doesn't pop out of gear and has a lot of good miles left in it.
