Help me INSTALL a big block...Bought a 468!

I see. Maybe that is a problem on the older rigs (1967-1972), but not at all on the newer rigs.

Yeah, the firewall clearance is at a premium in these older ones. I have the motor/tranny moved forward 2" already, but I'm still not sure it'll clear.

OK, I have already ordered: valve covers, oil dipstick, ignition parts (couldn't pass up that kit), and a equus timing light.

Everything look ok or do I need to change something?

I need to add to this: oil pan bolts.

Can you guys think of anything else? Also, can you recommend a fuel pressure regulator? It rained here all day so I didn't get to look at my current fuel lines to see what size they are.

Hey Z-

On that listing it doesn't specifically say that the distributor or the wires are MSD and I am guessing that is where they can save their money. That is just my guess.

Sean, you got a Tractor supply store nearby?
They got grade 8 bolts for cheap in bulk...grade 5 for less which would be good for much of the applications your buying bolts for!

Well, as usual, I don't have much experience with firewall/distributor clearance problems.
For some strange reason it never seems to come up with Fords.......

But, I have heard of a special tool that they make for solving that problem.
Finally found a picture of one.

Hope it helps.

Kinda hard to tell with the black firewall, but here's the clearance on my Mallory distributor with a standard cap. Its NOT HEI. Engine has been raised 3/4" over stock, but not moved forward.

Moved 2" forward, I think you might be ok with what you have.

Crap, hadn't noticed that. I guess we'll see when it shows up...

Dave, I'm not sure if there's a tractor supply nearby or not, I'll have to look.

AJ, thanks for that pic. I'm curious if I'll have any clearance issues where the factory clutch pushrod would come through either. It'd be nice if I didn't have to mess with it.

I'll get a better pic for you this weekend from the driver's side.

EDIT: I didn't do any clearancing on the firewall for the distributor itself. No changes on the height of the dish. I only changed the width to clear the valve covers.

Oh yeah... I expect your actual build thread to be fully updated (retroactively) with all this big block goodness.

You know, I'm not entirely sure why I haven't been updating that...

I could pull the "Adam" and post the same thing in 4 places.

Get a pump that doesn't need a reg. You are changing it anyway when fi happens.

Oh, right on. Thought it was recommended earlier that I get a reg inline with dual feeds to the carb. Will the pump I have in that list work? This one:

This big block stuff is making me feel like a total newb again btw...

That pump is fine. You are just finding out how great they are.

It's true!

I find that I over-think things I've never done before. When it comes time to rip the front clip and pull the small block I'll get after it like a fat kid on a cupcake:saweet::saweet::saweet:

right on the fuel pump Sean, I suggested an electric pump which requires a regulator, some mechanicals don't...be sure to check though. I got a this Holley....

http://www.jegs.com/i/Holley/510/12-454-11/10002/-1?parentProductId=

Thanks Dave, I'll look into whether or not a regulator is needed for that summit brand. With the Holley being almost twice as much and my intentions to eventually go EFI, I'm not certain I need the nicer pump for now. Summit is usually pretty good about warranty stuff too and a mech. fuel pump isn't a hard one to change.

Same pump. A Holley red would most likely be plenty and doesn't require a reg.
