Help me paint my bed.

don't be afraid to put lots of studs in and work/pull many areas.. steady pressure outward while hitting the perimeter.. especially those creases.. ideally you use a hammer "on" dolly tech for the crease areas...

did that kit come with a shrinking hammer?

It didn't come with a shrinking hammer. I'll have to get one. I attempted to reach up in there on theback side and iit's pretty darn tough. Even with a dolly on a handle I think it would be tricky to hold in the right spot while swinging the hammer. I think I'll have to devise some clever method of of putting pressure on the back side.

Yep, and if you need to you can wedge a 2x4 from bedside to bedside. Shouldn't take much pressure since you're lightly massaging the sheetmetal with the hammer.

I don't think the soccer ball will be quite substantial enough. But I have a couple ideas on how to rig up 2x4s and stuff back there to give me something solid. I didn't end up having a chance to play with it yesterday. Hopefully this weekend I'll get some time in despite working overtime at work both days...

Well it is getting better, though it may be hard to see in the pics. The dents are getting pulled and the difference between the high and low spots is becoming less severe. First off, here is a little ttrick I learned that helps a lot! Take the tip off the slide hammer and use a crow bar or similar to pry the dent out. Similar in principle to the stud lever. Just gotta make sure you don't add a dent while your pulling! But it worked really well!

Here is my attempt at getting a picture showing how much better it's gotten.

And here is where I'm at. I used a straight edge and found the current high and low spots. Horizontal are high spots. Vertical are low.

Thanks! Its working ok. I really only have about 3 hours total into it so far... If i could get a full day in, im sure i could get at least this spot filler ready.

Messed with it for another hour this morning. Played with some heating and cooling which actually fid help a bit. So here's where I'm a now. Studs in the low area. Lines in the high area. Pulling while tapping.

heat a qrter size spot, than quench with a cold wet rag to shrink.. there are other shrink hammer/dolly techniques i'll try to remember to discuss later...

I have been able to sneak my hand up in there to hold the dolly. I feel like part of my problem is that the highs and lows are so far apart. At this point im just trying to get everything the proper height or at least into a "low" no deeper than an 1/8". I would be fully satisfied with that. I just dont want to start laying on filler, begin sanding, and then discover i still have a high spot!

I don't have an eyeball for high / low so I had to use some guidecoat...I got the dry powder kind so I could just wash it off...but it's probably too early for guidecoat

I laid a little dykem on the area to try and show the highs and lows. It worked ok. I did create pretty sweet method of working the highs and lows! But its hard to explain. Basically, i put the slide hammer tip on the stud, put vice grips on the tip, and then pulled. While pulling, i put the handle side of the hammer on the high side. I pushed on the hammer while i pulled on the vice grips. Worked really well and very controlled!

So here are some pics. They really seem to have a way of making it look worse than it is. Its getting to be pretty decent. With any luck i'll have it ready for filler by the end of the weekend!

Well done sir. If I cared more about what my toilet looked like I would be doing this exact thing.

as long as nothing is more than 1/4" deep, your fine.. todays filler products are VASTLY better than the stuff from the old days...

just make sure it's got a NASTY cut on it before you fill... and make sure to drag in multiple directions to take any air pocket/bubbles out...

I was going to just weld in new panels from LMC but I haven't heard as good of things as I'd like.

Ryoken, I don't think I will actually get to the point of applying filler this weekend, but it will be ready for filler by the end of the weekend. I will get some 24-36 grit for my da for the filler to latch on to.

small diameter rotary is best.. so it can get in all the nooks and crannies... 24 grit 2" rolocs are ideal...

I still have some stuff to buy before I get to filler anyway. I need the filler, some long sanding blocks, some paper, some surface prep and a mixing board before I actually apply filler. In a little bit I'll be asking some more procedural questions.
