help my 77 pass smog!

Just bought a 77 Cheyenne, dont know much about anything yet, Ive been workin on helicopters for about 6 years so I know how to turn wrenches, but I couldnt point to much on a truck engine. Anyway the truck hasnt been registered since 05, and I got it temporary tags until I get it to pass smog (california). Im ready to drive it down there but I dont want to waste my money if it is going to fail visual inspection. Its got a rebuilt 400sb w/ edelbrock carb,air cleaner. Its got 3" exhaust w/ flowmaster muffler, no cats. It has an empty hole in the manifold where a heater hose would go. Its also got a filter on the crankcase vent instead of what would normally go there. without posting a picture is there anything yall would say I need to do before driving it down and getting it tested? Appreciate any input yall could give me. Thanks.

i would get some cats on there my friend ....... or find a "hook up"
 
wow you have to meet emissions on a 1977 model? in louisiana our cut off date is 1979 after that we need cats and pumps...

Uh oh. To do it legally, the engine in it has to match what the truck originally came with or has to have been offered as an option that year. Failing that, you are also allowed to swap in a "newer" motor, but that has to have all the factory emissions equipment installed during the newer model year and working (fuel injection, egr, etc).

I don't know if they will be able to tell or not, but I would not tell them it's a 400. Maybe they won't notice.

You'll need to hook up a PCV valve. That's easy though.
 
if you don't mind cheating the system you could see if you would qualify for historic vehicle plates or something. I think you need to carry classic car insurance but you wouldn't have to smog it. Thats what I did to my 85' in arizona. I don't have any emissions junk on mine.

It's not old enough for that in CA. I looked into it for my 71 and only stuff from the depression era (30's or earlier) qualifies unless it's some kind of historically significant vehicle. If you can convince them that the previous owner shot JFK in your K5, helped end the cold war, or brought about world peace, I think you're golden. :)

Here's the text:
1) A motor vehicle with an engine of 16 or more cylinders manufactured prior to 1965.
(2) A motor vehicle manufactured in the year 1922 or prior thereto.
(3) A vehicle which was manufactured after 1922, is at least 25 years old, and is of historic interest.
(b) The special identification plates assigned to motor vehicles with an engine of 16 or more cylinders manufactured prior to 1965 and to any motor vehicle manufactured in the year 1922 and prior thereto shall run in a separate numerical series, commencing with "Horseless Carriage No. 1".
The special identification plates assigned to vehicles specified in paragraph (3) of subdivision (a) shall run in a separate numerical series, commencing with "Historical Vehicle No. 1".
Each series of plates shall have different and distinguishing colors.
(c) A fee of twenty-five dollars ($25) shall be charged for the initial issuance of the special identification plates. Such plates shall be permanent and shall not be required to be replaced. If such special identification plates become damaged or unserviceable in any manner, replacement for the plates may be obtained from the department upon proper application and upon payment of such fee as is provided for in Section 9265.
(d) All funds received by the department in payment for such identification plates or the replacement thereof shall be deposited in the California Environmental License Plate Fund.
(e) These vehicles shall not be exempt from the equipment provisions of Sections 26709, 27150, and 27600.
(f) As used in this section, a vehicle is of historic interest if it is collected, restored, maintained, and operated by a collector or hobbyist principally for purposes of exhibition and historic vehicle club activities.
 
talk about some b/s laws. some states are too uptight. global warming is a bunch of crap too. its just the natural cycle our planet goes through. remember that whole ice age thing? i am sure all the gases didnt help. people are afraid of things they cannot control IE the climate so they make up reasons why they cant control it and who's fault it is that made it to where we cant control it. haha dont get me worked up on this...
 
Ok, don't mention its a 400, and they won't notice.

Go to kragen, and order the CALIFORNA specific cats you need. Should be about $150 for the 3" CA specific one. Setup your PCV valve off of the valve cover breather.

Make sure all your vac lines are hooked up properly to the carb. Install the Preheat hose (or whatever its called, the correguated metal one from the exhaust manifold to the air intake). Its an auto fail w/o that.

Check your timing, make sure its w/in tollearances. IIRC, on a SBC, the tollerance they are looking for is 0˚ +- 2.

Put the cats on there, take it on the freeway and get them hot, and roll into the smog place.

I feel sorry for yall that have to have your trucks smog testing, and this is another reason I love living in Kentucky; no smog testing, no lift laws, only inspection done on vehicles is when ya bring one in to KY from another state or its not been titled in a year or two.

The 400 was available in '77, so that part shouldn't be an issue.

And there was no emissions equipment on trucks with a GVWR over 6000 until a couple years later; a 4WD '77 K5 generally had a curb weight of 4700 plus its rated for 1500 pounds in the back, hence a 6200 lb GVWR and no emissions equipment (at least outside of CA).

I bet CA did implement emissions sooner, so you'll probably need to figure out what was there (catalytic converters, AIR pump, EGR, stuff like that)
 
'96 and older is exempt in the great Commonwealth of MA which is a new thing here so I feel for ya. I think I'd trade ya for the rust any day though :(.
 
N.C. - '95 & older are exempt. I gave my '99 sierra to my son, got tired of dicking with it.

I will not own anything newer than that. Even if I hit the lottery!:D

Don't get me started on the global warming nazis...:mad:
