Help with electrical issue in my '73

Just tell her if you don't replace the battery--she "might" get stranded (or worse !)..one tow bill far exceeds the cost of a new battery!..

It would probably be me that gets stranded but guess who gets the call to come get me with a tow strap. And she hates flat towing. :rotfl:

That's why I was counting on your help with a truck older than me......
Well then get a new alternator from Western Alternator and a new Deka battery... AGM or lead acid.
Then a new tray to hold the battery.
Tell the wife that this is the best solution for long term reliability!
Can't half ass it!!
My wife puts up with a good amount from me as far as truck stuff.....

Oh mine is more than reasonable. It just goes a lot better when you have an explanation. Truthfully it's more about justifying it to myself probably.

I always forget about getting this stuff from Pat. I ended up ordering a new ACDelco 12SI alternator from Amazon; it had a 20% off deal for "Green Monday" so it was only $56. It bumps the output up to 100amps over the 63amps the current one has. Thinking about future add-ons.

I'd add a 10 gauge wire from the "charge" stud on the back of the alternator to the positive battery post,so it'll be able to handle the increased amps better..your old original wiring may not like the increased load..

I did that to my diesel pickup and noticed the amp meter reads higher and you could tell the batteries had more guts when cranking it--it's only 36 years old,so I'm sure the wires are turning green inside!..

Not a bad idea. I forgot on my crew cab I put a larger gauge wire in.

It's a lot easier to add additional taps to the Deka battery with both the top posts and side posts.... (see what I'm doing there )

Sounds like well thought out there.

But we need MrsK5 to give you more grief and keep you in line!!!!

Even if I already know how nice she is!

:D

Got a new battery. They couldn't test it because it didn't have enough charge. This after it ran in the truck for a good 15 minutes yesterday while I was checking things out and messing with the choke settings. It should have been charged up. Plus it was a smaller Group 75 battery; I thought it seemed a tad small sitting in the battery tray. New battery is an Deka AGM Group 34/78 which has the dual post setup.

New alternator did the trick. I did run an 8ga wire from the alternator straight to the battery plus the factory wire that runs down to the starter (or maybe it's the junction block on the firewall). Here's a picture of the difference between the factory 10SI (which had a rebuilt sticker on it) and the new 12SI.

Not much different. The 12SI does have improved cooling and it's available in stock form with higher amp output. And the 12SI is metric.

When I pulled the old battery out, there was a mound of battery corrosion on the tray. Not sure if that was from this battery or the previous.
