So I'm gonna dive head first into building my first motor from a bare block. First off this is the parts list I'm looking at. Feel free to add comments and insight. This motor will be strictly offroad only and would like to balance reliability with cost.

I haven't checked out many different places yet so this list is based totally off Summit's website.

Eagle Rotating Assembly: 999.95
cast crank
5140 steel connecting rods
FM244 aluminum alloy hypereutectic pictons
perfect circle piston rings
Clevite 77 bearings
harmonic balancer--extra
flexplate--extra

OR INDIVIDUAL PARTS

Parts
--------

Balancer: Summit Big Chevy internal balance: 219.95

Crank: have a 2 piece main that will need to be grinded to fix scored bearing journals
have a 1 piece main in an unknown condition--know by 5/17

the eagle stuff although chinese made isnt bad really. the kits put together from summit or jegs will save you more on the major stuff. machine work can get expensive if you have to recondition alot of parts. the cast steel cranks in the eagle kit or scat are stronger than a factory cast iron crank.

one thing to consider is yes the eagle cranks are cheap but, i worked for a engine builder and it was his experience that the cheaper eagle cranks ended up costing as much as the good ones because they took so much longer to balance

I'm not set on Eagle at all thats just what I've found. If it's Chinese steel I'd rather stay away from it anyway.

Powerwise...this motor is gonna be for fun. But at the same time I don't want the wrong type of power. I'm not racing the truck but playing on trials, Some good high rpm mud runs and desert type wheeling. Also the 454 crate motors come with 450hp and 500lbs for around $5000. So I figure if I build my own motor for around the same price I should be able to squeeze out a little more HP and Torque.

Dude, you're within a few miles of P.A.W., one of the larger engine kit outfits around. They're located at 20235 Nordhoff in Chatsworth. They sell on line, etc. but you don't even have to pay shipping (tax yes). Their Chevy catalog is about 2 inches thick. Website: http://www.pawinc.com/ Have a look.

HOLY CRAP!!! I completely forgot about PAW. my 350 was built through them:doah: Thanks for that reminder.

to get away from chinease steel your gonna have to spend a bit. some of the cnia stuff isnt bad really. the eagle stuff can be a pian to balance, but it depends on your bobweight as to how dificult. the scat stuff is ok too, i have run there cast 9000 cranks in a few 383's for drag racing, turning them 7500rpms, with a 200 shot of nitrous and not a single issue. if you have a nice fatory crank just have it turned if needed or polished and run it, make sure they check for straightness too.

My suggestion would be to save money and go with the flat lifters and solid rockers. You really don't need the high rpm stuf....unless maybe your mudding, etc. Also, the factory stuff will hold up very well in the power range that you are looking for. Might save some coin there too. Just my thoughts....
