help with exhaust

how about any advice on summit brand camshaft , part # sum-k1103? advertised duration272/282..lift...442/.465 any idea about this grind or the improvement it may make over stock?

i have no idea what the stock duration / lift is on a stock 305 so any info would help out a great deal.....i want some more power ...gas mileage is not an issue...just want as much torgue and power that i can get at a reasonable price , gears will come later also

i wouldn't run with a summit cam for the simple fact i don't trust them as much as i trust a known cam and lifter manufacturer like comp or crane since thats pretty much what they specialize in. ive also heard 305's eat cams pretty bad. to get more opinions than mine you should post your questions in the garage so we don't high jack this thread anymore. thread hijacking done.

YEAH STOP HIJACKIN MY SHIZ!!!! im still trying to find some $200 or under headers and spray pain them with tthat high heat paint any more suggestions

Any more suggestions? yea, skip the paint. I just went thru this with my truck. Paint lasted about a day. It chips, flakes and essentially burns off. Ill be doing a post here in the next day or so. Im going to show my 4 year old painted headers and my FREE!!! Ceramic ones. :D

I wish I had a sound byte of my truck, thats what I did, I got the cone things cheap off e-bay and headers to straight to some dumps. It really did sound great and it was loud. I had guys ask me all the time how much I had in the motor etc etc. It was a bone stock motor with a bone stock cam only mod was the headers. Kind of funny to me but it did annoy me alot I am glad to have an exhaust on my truck now

I had a stock engine with a stock exhaust and a bad donut at the collector and I was asked by everyone what I had under the hood, I couldn't wait to fix it, my ears were messed up after a day.
I love a silent sleeper, loud is not for me. :o

I used VHT paint one one header and $5 dupli-color 1200F paint on the other. The durability seemed identical. Neither chipped or flaked, but it seems to just burn off over time. It kind of stays on the flanges and some other parts that don't get as hot. Also, you can kind of touch-up the outsides of the tubes while they are installed.

If you really care, get Jet-Hot or ceramic coating, but it costs as much as the headers.

i just want a nice cheap headers that im not going to have to go grinding on the frame, brackets, etc to try to get tthem on.

You shouldnt have to. with that being said, there is no guarantee that headers designated specifically for your truck will fit 100%. Unless you go with some high end Thorley headers. On my heddman, the passenger side hit the rear front spring shackle. but a lil persuasion with a 5 foot pry bar. the header fit. The header can be tweaked to fit. That is what the muff shop did. It never leaked or had any issues. The header bends pretty easily actually. Just bolt up to the head as best as you can and then get a pry bar near the collector.

if you run car headers you will have to grind the frame, if you run truck headers the only place you might have a problem is at the collectors where they would contact the shackle bolts or nuts as mentioned before. go to parts america or summit and put in what vehicle its for. i wouldn't go with the cheapest headers i could find cause of poor quality. flowtech headers aren't the best, but i couldn't see paying the money for a set of hookers or thorleys cause i might be swapping in a big block later on

I posted this in my FREE Thread. But here is the new headers I just got, well new to me. they are about 5 years old and have been sitting in the back of my buddies blazer. They are ceramic coated and dont seem too bad. They fit great. I had some hooker competition headers that didnt fit that well. And the drivers side would hit the Tranny linkage. These new headers fit great. they arent close to anything in my engine bay, not the frame, shackles, tranny linkage nothing. My buddy isnt sure what model, but he thinks they are Heddman, he says it begins with an H, so its one or the other. They are for a 1985 350 TBI motor, but they fit my 84 carb motor perfectly.

The top one is hooker competition specific for my year and model.

The bottom one could be heddman, made for a 1985 350. both are for 4x4

if your wondering what the hedmans look like and fit like, take a look at glenn's (chevy305) thread. he has pics of his header install on there.

I got a pair of Dynomax Blackjack headers from Summit for my 305 for under $150. Haven't had any problems in two years except for the bolts all coming loose after about 14 months or so. That's something to watch. They cleared the shackles, but the driver's side was really close. They were pointed right at the stock transfer case cross member. I had to drive it around the corner to the muffler shop with no pipes on it and have them bend me some short pieces to clear the cross member, then I did the rest myself. I didn't see a need for a crossover pipe with my stock 305. I would say to make the pipes exit out beyond the sides of the bed behind the rear shackles. That way they're out of the way for the most part and the resonance won't be as bad in the cab as it would if you let the pipes end under the bed like some guys.
