herd of turtles expo build *SOLD*

ok, tune up did NOT go as planned.

changed plugs, cap, rotor, wires........ wont start

checked and rechecked firing order, shifted firing order one position each way

used test light and have power coming out of coil and coil wire, tested post on top of cap and no power. so its going in but not out.

put old cap and rotor on, same problem.

changed ignition control module..... still no power out of cap.

i am up for any suggestions, please.

i noticed the inside of the distributor is rusty, could it be the magnetic pickup? oh and the rotor is turning.

Had kinda same problem and it was the pickup. I don't think the part cost much and is worth changing.

Are you getting spark to the plugs? Any popping when trying to start?

I did a tune up recently on a TBI 4.3 V6 and wasn't paying attention to how the rotor was oriented. Ended up putting it on 180* off, and the strange thing was that it installed that way without any problem. Went to start the truck and it was popping and spitting. Checked timing and firing order several times over before I took it apart to figure out what I did. It ran before, didn't run after, must have been something I did.

Pay attention to the slot in the dist shaft and the tang inside the rotor, that's where I screwed it up. I lined up the tension spring in the rotor with the slot in the dist shaft. WRONG! :doah:

Check that you didn't do what I did.

No spark coming out of cap so no spark at plugs.

This one is the external coil HEI, the rotor is a push on and will only go on one way.

I'm starting to think its the magnetic pickup.

I've had crap like that happen before and I always suspect what I did last to be the cause. Since the truck was running before, try putting the old cap and stuff back on, make sure the rotor's pointing at the right spot when the #1 piston is at TDC and see if the engine will start. That way if any of the new stuff you put on is no good, you will know (unless you got the spark plug wires out of order, but it sounds like you got them right).

Sometimes when I have the distributor out for whatever reason and I put it back in and it won't start, it's becuase I had the #1 piston on the wrong stroke. Sometimes I can't tell when it's at TDC and that's the problem all along.

ok new update

still not running, i thought maybe the magnetic pickup wasnt working so i threw a new one in and still no go

all i have is a test light so i thought maybe even though im getting power from the coil, maybe it wasnt enough to start it. new coil and still nothing.

by now i basicly have a new ignition system.

then i notice the PO has hacked the wiring harness between the coil and ICM and i have a hot wire from the coil going nowhere and looking like it was pinched between 2 parts (on purpose, insulation was stripped off).

i have a new wiring harnes from the coil to the ICM coming, should be here in 2 days.

again i pull the coil wire from the cap and test the wire with a test light and have power, plug the coil wire back into the cap and pull the #1 wire from the cap, test the post for #1 on the cap and no power.

Something's grounding you out somehow when you plug the wire back up. Try putting the old #1 wire back on the plug and see if it works.
