New pics 9/17/09 - Still need to paint it, but threw it back on the truck for a couple pics...

I looked at a bunch of bumper pics about a month ago to steal some ideas. Made my head spin.
Had a lot of crap going on between then and now... fresh train of thought and jumping in with both feet.

I hope to get some time to work on it tomorrow and thurs. - want it done before the weekend. Shackle mounts and corners are going to take a little time...

I am chuckling at the stand for the bumper in the later pix ... but that last one, I think there's something going on with your wheel bearing or balljoints :haha:

Slick bumper, though, lower profile than the monstrosities some people build :surepal:

Scouthead,
I would like to see how this goes together. I have been taking pics for my 1991 Sub to build a similar bumper. Let me know if you need a hand: I live just up from Adams and Brookhurst.

That looks nice.
Are you going to wrap it around the sides?

Yes, and that's about all I have to do tomorrow...
well, almost. Once I have corners, I need to throw in some braces running back to the frame.

And paint it?
might be putting some tubing on it also, but don't have my bender at my house right now. I can always paint it again in a few months if the tube work goes on it. It should be well scratched and dinged by then anyhow.:D

Nice bumper... I'm with everyone else about the design, I like the low profile setup.

Bunch of pics of my recovery points. There are 2 1/4 inch plates that sandwich the frame mount. The one on the inside is welded to the face of the angle that I used to cap off the winch plate, and also has a "tang" that penetrates through all layers...
Outer plate goes over everything else, gets welded, and 2 of the mounting bolts go through it in case of weld failure (better f*^$ing not!) There is a piece of 1/2 inch steel that goes between the two plates, and although it does not go through the entire bumper, it is welded to both of the 1/4 inch plates, and to the front and backsides of the bumper's "face".

Made a lot of progress, but still not done! Now I'm kicking myself for cutting the radius in the top of the bumper ends... everything else on the bumper is very angular, and not sure how to start the end capping...

I have cut and scrapped a lot of cardboard mockups, but I just need to tack something on there and start wailing on it with a hammer.

oooh... shackle!.jpg

holy D ring mount fabrication skills batman!!!

someones handy with a welder i see. that ****s like watching a magician to me

The fairlead looks like it's too deep in the bumper. Won’t the cable rub on the bumper when you pull at a sharp angle?

I'm on it... Need to get a couple bolts today to put through the vertical rollers. Then I can notch the piece under the fairlead. If you are talking about side clearance, might look deeper because the rollers are missing. Stay tuned for the next set of pics, then let me know what you think.
I'm not really sure how sharp of an angle I can pull the cable safely at anyway... ???
