BLUERIBBON COALITION ACTION ALERT!
Dear BRC Action Alert Subscriber,

Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest Travel Management DEIS Available

The Forest Service (FS) has announced the release of the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for Motorized Vehicle Use on the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest, located in southwestern Oregon.
During a 45-day public comment period, the agency will conduct a series of open houses to review the environmental document, including maps and alternatives, to discuss the motorized route designation process and to seek public comments (see schedule below). This comment period ends May 11, 2009.

The DEIS discloses the environmental impacts associated with four alternatives including a proposed action that outlines future management of motorized vehicle travel on the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest. The alternatives include the following:

  • Alternative 1 is a No Action alternative that reflects the Forest's current condition.
  • Alternative 2 is an alternative that would implement actions consistent with the Travel Management Rule with no change. This includes no change to the current system of National Forest System roads, trails and off-road vehicle areas.
  • Alternative 3 reflects the agency's Proposed Action to enact the Travel Management Rule and to reduce resource damage, user conflicts, and safety concerns.
  • Alternative 4 addresses additional resource concerns and user conflicts and proposes a reduction in motorized use over Alternative 3.
Copies of the document can be obtained by contacting one of the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest's Ranger District or Forest Supervisor's Office. The DEIS and maps are also available on the Forest's website at www.fs.fed.us/r6/rogue-siskiyou/projects/travel/.

I'll be attending the Medford meeting. Anyone want to join me? I will be writing in a letter as well - and I'll post it up here. I'll likely walk it into the Ashland ranger station tho, because I feel like it will be more personal that way - an attempt to put a kind face on a group typically portrayed as asshats in the media...

I don't think I could make the medford meeting but I might go to the Grant's Pass as it's on a weekend and a little closer to me. Post up what your letter is going to contain, I'd like to see what you're saying. I have a pretty detailed technical report of off-roading and the effects it has on the environment, busting myths and providing solutions if anyone would like a copy of it.

i would like a copy of it. if it's not too long, could you copy and paste it into this thread? it's funny to hear you say that grants pass is closer to you... because as the crow flies it's so much farther away! too bad there's no decent road over to the coast from where i live. i intend to find a really good system of forest service roads to use to get to and from the coast. should get the trip time cut down significantly. :) i'll keep you posted on that! :)

i'm up for some backwoods forest road exploring... gotta get to it! :D

Yeah, the report is WAY to long to post up, but if you give me your email i'd be happy to send it to you. It's chock full of some good ammunition as well as solutions to problems caused by OHV vehicles. Yeah, Grant's Pass is about half an hour closer (3 hrs from Arcata). Eventually i'll make it up there to see that rig of yours... I'm just trying to find something cool to drive up there in :)

This might be hijack.... Colby, I've worked in the areas between I-5 and Humboldt County. There are no really good roads to cut off time. The Bald Hills road, Hwy 96, and Grayback are the only roads that go from one side to the other. Now if you wanna go on a little adventure there are miles and miles of Forest Service roads that you could get lost on. Some places you wouldn't want to go without some heat though. End Hijack.
