Hickey front axel truss assembly

Got pics of it? Are the rods straight and not bent? Can you verify its a Hickey made part?

What Hickey parts do you have in your shop? Are they Hickey marked? I would also trade for one of the all welded brush guards that Hickey made.

Mostly diff covers. Got the swing out tire carrier, kicker bar/brace for the factory roll bar, t-case skidplate, thats all. I have 6 diff covers so far and want more.

The whole idea here isn't to hoard the parts but rather to save and preserve them from rusting, rotting and from scrap or crusher due to unknowing people.

The rods are slightly bent, it has been on a well used 4x4 for 35 years. I've gotta work tomorrow, I'll get pics Sunday.

I'd bet my left nut that truss wouldnt do anything to stop that.

This one will:

welding the tubes might help keep them from spinning under load, but it does nothing to increase housing strength. I've broken/bent a pile of housings from what I would consider minor hits and yes that simple piece of 3/4" round stock with some preload on it would have prevented most failures.

I've had the same Con-ferr truss under the front of my K5 for 9 or 10 years and the housing is straight as an arrow. somewhat visible here:

I have actually broken spindle studs and ball joints from rough landings (knuckle or spindle parts ways with housing) on the axle with the Con-ferr on it. As crappy as it is to fix, it is still repairable trailside where as the housing is not. I carry spare spindle studs, ball joints, and brakelines just for that :D

No doubt that first pic will do the job but having a truss ontop of the axle is only useful for jumps/desert stuff.

Welding the diff tubes WILL most definitely stop them from twisting/pulling out but you are right its not gonna do anything for bending the housing.

I agree that the truss helps a lot.
I'm one of those who have bent a housing.

Are you positive its an HE truss? Any numbers or labels stamped on it? Willing to sell it so I can save it from rust/destruction, etc.?

Front dual shock mounts can be had by just about any lift manufacturer today. Rears, too. Hickey pretty much designed them and everyone else copied them.

Haha, I cut one up for some scrap that we used to make the sliders on my buddy's Samurai a few months ago. I had no idea it was of value to anyone, the design sucks compared to what I could whip up with the welder, plus I have a 60.

That low-profile hood is probably ugly as sin, but it's actually something pretty innovative. The biggest grip I have about these trucks is the peripheral vision. They should have taken it another step further and sold a narrowed front clip :D, cuz they actually look badass.

Got a pic of those diff covers? I found one for sale locally & was thinking about buying it. It came from a 72 K5 12 bolt axle. It is cast alum, & has HE cast into it. I was guessing that it was hickey.

What are they worth?

I got one of those trusses on the front of my '71, been there since the '80's. I've been gonna clip it off with the torch but never seem to get around to it. My buddy has that exact same hood thats in the first post.......ugly as sin!!

What front axle is that in the top pic?

Did 1,000HP and a dune have anything to do with that?
Nope, did that when I still was only have 500hp.

Man that looks slow now.
Afterward, I got the a used truss from a friend. I think the truss helped when I took the blazer out for the first time on the 675 rating (4150 carb, no NOS) and launch it off a dune.

My bother and nephew are standing how far it blazer traveled in the air.
At the landing, it left a big divot where the bumper landed in the sand.

COCHEV,

What's going on with your front shackle in that pic?

Looks like the shackles are angled in, and the lower bushing isn't even tightened down...

:usaflag:

Would have to run to shop to snap pics.

Value of them is whatever you're willing to pay. These HE parts have more of sentimental value to me than a price.

I'd be willing to purchase that 12 bolt cover you found, if you're willing to pass it on to me.

Honestly I was thinking about buying it for my '69 C-10. I thought it would be a cool nostalgic cover for it. I am gonna check with him & see what he will take for it.

I went out and cleaned and took pics. of the truss and found no markings other than a single "0". It looks identical to the Hickey ones I've seen though.
