HID conversion opinions

I have 4 4x6s in my 90 that are H4s. I'm unsure where they came from though. Ill try and figure it out. I run 55w 6000's. My lows are dual filament so they go into "high" when I turn my highs on. As well as my inner lights.

How low are they? still blinding? Id like my lows to be sensible for the other drivers on the road. What all wiring modifications did you use? Im looking into ddm's raptor kit (buddy has it and loves it) using lmc's housing on a quad style setup and more than likely an lmc wiring relay kit.

All the lenses for our trucks, regardless of aftermarket maker, do not control the light very well. I run stock sealed beams in my 91, and even the stock lights + relay mod are too bright for other drivers. They just have crappy light scatter, and no real cutoff.

I would not run HID's in our low beam setups for this reason on the street. Highs...all bets are off.

Go with the Raptor's. You won't be sorry.

ive used the 35dollar ones multiple times.
No failures to date.

Basically the cheapo ones work great.

I came to say this...^^^

I have the cheapest eBay HID's in my Quad, and they're still running strong at 2 years old.
(Keep in mind, we ride in Pismo, so saltwater is a factor.) ;)

I can't remember the site but they sell some projector sealed beam conversion with Bi-Xeon lights for about 100 bones or so. I may go that route, but gonna be hard when I narrow the front.

I run raptors. Very happy.

I'll go more in depth when I'm not on my phone.

Have you looked at the Bosch lights that Irish1941 has for sale in the classifieds? I have 2 sets ordered from him, he told me he will be able to get them shipped by the end of the month. He has posted up some pics of the lights in all fours on the mini-quad front end. The lights he has are designed for high-beam. I have also talked with a member here that is pleased with the LMC set-up.

I just wanted to add that anyone putting HID lights in halogen lamp housings and driving on the street is a jerk. Plus they are delusional in thinking they can see better since the foreground is so bright. Unfortunately, the long distance light is worse. All this conversion does is glare other drivers.

You must use HID housings. Not available for your vehicle? Sorry, do the fabrication or stick with halogen. There's a lot of light to gain with heavy wiring, relays and clean lenses/reflectors.

I agree , except about the light not being better. That's not true at all.

Mine were in projector housings... Am I a jerk?

Srsly.... Wtf is a halogen housing?

The lightsource on an hid bulb is quite a bit further out than it's halogen counterpart. This puts the source point in the wrong area so all the reflectors are off focus.

I fixed this before by spacing the bulb back about a half inch. You can play with the distance and find out were the ideal bulb placement is. "Hid housing's" have this already so there is not an issue.

I guess I will clarify that I was responding to rompinstompinmudmonkey about upgrading the mini-quad lights. I completely agree about being concerned about blinding other drivers. K85Octane stated he was looking for options for off-road use, I believe, but maybe I misread??? I wasn't pushing HID's in halogen-designed housings. I'm all for being respectful of other drivers!

I'M NOT RUNNING HID LIGHTS FOR DRIVING :waytogo:

Ok, got that out of the way. :doah:

Looking to swap out my sealed high beams for composite H4 conversions. After that, I'm going to run an H4 HID setup.

I'm only looking to run these offroad. I'm not ready for extra lights (like Hella's etc, which would be way better I know) but I'm just looking to take advantage of the lower lenses and put some HIDs in them.

Does anyone have any experience with any particular HID conversion? Better still, any particular EBay seller and brand? There are HID conversions on EBay ranging from $35 to $1000. (I can't believe I can get everything for $35, WTH?) I'd rather not spend all my money on this, so somewhere between $100-$200 is plenty.

I'm also considering some Hella E-code composite housings for the same location. I don't need them focused and might find it better without any kind of projectors (for offroading and having a wide spread) That being said, would the cost and better focus of an E-code be superior to the cheaper composite style with upper horizon lighting?

Crazy cheap HID kit:

Well, I am using the Cheap $30 Ebay HID kit. Xentec brand?
do NOT get the slim ballast they are crappy!.
if anything read the sticker on the ballasts. and get the ones that say 105 degrees Celsius. they are Brighter. and a bit better IMHO..
and you can find the H4 housings on ebay also a bit cheaper.
just do NOT buy the Cheap ebay "Projector" housings. the light pattern is garbage..

What did you use to space the bulb back with?

Bought these lamps. I might try using the stupid "city light" for a blinker, changing it to an orange bulb and wiring it to the other blinker.

These are HID lights I got. The seller I found that sold the Xentec brand only had 6000k color and slim ballast. So I'm going to try these in 5000k.

Can't wait to hook everything up, just need time. :)

FYI:

The HID lights are nice, bright, and good 5000k color.

The lens are built well, however, they still suck donkey balls. The center deflector is removable. Still doesn't help. The pattern is terrible and there is no visible hot spot like my old Silverstars. Need to try something else.

Yeah the aftermarket lights on my dodge have a crappy pattern too.

I just ordered some 5k HID's well see if that helps. I ended up getting low beam only
