Dad said the new ones "arent made like they used to", any idea why he says that? Ones he has are the OLD ones with the wooden handle. i was looking for one to carry around with me and just want to make sure i get a quality one. Sometimes he thinks somethings trash when its perfectly fine, just newer than what he bought new in 1960 :haha:

I have one that is the Hi-Lift brand. As long as you keep it clean & oiled it will not fail you.

we should turn this into a "uses for highlift jack" thread!! Il start
1. A comealong

Yeah, the original hi-lift brand are just as good as always. I have read stories about the knock-offs failing under load and people being hurt. I would stick to the original brand if I could. I have a knock off around the shop for light jobs and it works, but I wouldn't trust it pulling a truck up a hill as a come-along.

I have the orange 48" farm jack from Harbor Frieght. It works okay until it gets some mud in the mechanism. Usually a liberal dose of WD-40 will free it up. It's not really tall enough for my truck either. I wish I had the 60" version. Oh and the handle doesn't come off like the real Hi-Lift does.

3) fence post extractor

ive got a twenty+ year old farm jack and its just as good as the actual "hi-lift" cast one thats out now.

I have the 60 hi lift, was only 67 with shipping from amazon.

4) Door spreader

I also have a 60" hi-lift...

5. construction/building tool - Used it to support the deck I was building on the back of my house while I got everything leveled and drilled holes.

6. tie rod sleeve (for a Jeep anyways) - On trail one day a guy with a TJ bent his tie rod into a "U" we straightened it and used the hi-lift handle as a sleeve to keep it from bending again so he could get home.

7. think I seen one used as a jack once...

Red highlifts are the better ones.

All the mechanisms suck when you get mud in them.

Hi lift brand has a lot of accessorys others don't

I'll never buy a knockoff hilift again. My harborfreight one used to unload so bad it would punch you with the handle. Got a name brand one and its great.

Add one to uses...

Sub in for forklift when cycling suspension.

Bender for square tube.

Really? Mine is black. Does the red powdercaot make it stronger or something?:haha:

NOoooooo it makes it faster!!!!!!

The red ones use all cast parts, the black ones use some stamped steel parts. Even though they are rated the same, if you compare the two you can see the differences.

My black one with a red handle looks identical in every way. Mine is also pretty much brand new and it's leaning against the wall in my living room next to my shelf full of parts:

I've got the 60" black one, works good until it's muddy... Like everyone else said...
